We were lucky to catch up with William J. Bruce III recently and have shared our conversation below.
How did you develop your confidence and self-esteem?
First off, thank you for inviting me back.
You know I tell people that I never went to school for any of this. Early on I never had the cake for that and just wasn’t about to sign a student loan based on some government lie, so I had to just trust that God had a spot for me in this industry. It’s in God that I find my confidence.
As far as self-esteem, that has been a much longer journey, and shall I say an ongoing journey. You know society has a way of creating this false image of what to be [or] what to look like, and it’s dangerous to try to view yourself through the lens of this false image. Sometimes I think it’s best to watch Cool Runnings, then, go into the bathroom and say to yourself “Look in the mirror and tell me what you see.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Well, I’ve been involved in the entertainment industry for about 20 years now. I’ve had the privilege of representing celebrities like Shawn Harper (NFL, and MTV Made Coach) and wrestling legend the “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase (WWE Hall of Famer) . I was blessed to handle Ted during his peak in Google Trends. Later I was honored to act as the executive producer for Bridge Wars a hip-hop compilation album featuring Mahogany Jones (four-time Champion of BET’s “Freestyle Friday’s” battle competitions), F.E.R.N (Capital Records artist whose tracks were produced by DukeDaGod of The Diplomats). From time to time I do film work like playing a gang leader in Lost Penny or working as a script revisionist for In the Blink of an Eye starring Eric Roberts.
Currently I’m working on a thriller novel called “Hate” (working title). “Hate” is a dark chilling story about a promoter named Irvin who is dealing with the mysterious death of a friend. The story delves deep into his psyche as he comes to terms with what happened and tries to move on.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I know I’ve been asked this before. I would have to say gratefulness, kindness, and honesty are likely the three best morals I can think of.
As to how to best develop these skills, or morals. I would say practice. You never know who that person beside you is in line at the grocery store, or ahead of you in the car, or blocking your way onto the subway or what they are going through. We can exercise dedication, honesty and gratefulness to everyone and make the world a better place.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents always put us children first and raised us with manors. They taught us that all mankind was created equal and to love everyone.
I watched as a child as my parents lived out what love should look like. My dad treated my mom like a lady, my mom respected my dad, my parents cared for those who were less fortunate. Sadly these are traits that we see less and less in society today.
I’ve seen my parents make great sacrifices so that we can enjoy life.
