We recently connected with WIllie Bell and have shared our conversation below.
WIllie, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
Understanding that we were all born with gifts has helped me to persist in spite of haters, nay-sayers, etc. I truly believe that what is for me is for me with that being said I also understand that once I found my gifts, it is up to me to continue to develop my talent. Realistically speaking I also realize that the last thing that I can expect from planting an apple tree, is the apple. In time, I have to plant it in rich soil, water it, nurture it and protect it from elements that may damage it. That concept has application in life. As I continue my journey, I have to keep nurturing myself, feed my self knowledge and protect myself from distractions that will hinder me which aids with my persistent in spite of obstacles that may come my way.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a licensed professional counselor, a licensed professional counseling-supervisor, the supervisor of a behavioral health unit, in private practice and launching a business. I enjoy imparting knowledge upon others in reference to the counseling profession as well as helping others to gain a better perspective on any challenges in life in effort to overcome them. I am in the process of launching a business and starting a men’s mental health group to continue to develop myself as well as others.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that aided me in my journey is discipline, determination and discretion. You have to dedicate yourself to discipline and/or have the sticktoitness to continue on in spite of doubters, nay-sayers, etc. You have to be determined or have the drive to develop yourself or overcome whatever is in your way. We all have the same number of hours of a week so we have to spend time determined to succeed. And with discretion, problem solving and understanding that goals are our light house we can reach far beyond what we think.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
It is better to try to be well rounded to include improving upon areas that we aren’t as strong in. I consider myself to be an introvert yet people often ask me of things to include advice, opinion, knowledge, etc. This has allowed me to be more open and communicate better because if someone doesn’t ask I usually keep to myself or keep knowledge to myself. As I impart knowledge the more I am ask to impart knowledge which has provide me with more opportunity and continues to allow me to grow.
