We were lucky to catch up with Winn Alexander recently and have shared our conversation below.
Winn, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I’m always experimenting and trying something new with the music. If I find myself in a creative funk, I’ll pick up the guitar and jam out some of my favorite songs, like the Beatles Blackbird, Norwegian Wood, maybe some Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan or whatever I’m vibing with at the time. I often will run through my original songs too. Sometimes it’s just finding a cool riff and running with it. I always have a pen and notepad around. You’ll catch things people say sometimes that can make for great lyrics or song titles. I get melodies that come to me too. Sometimes a song will just naturally develop that way. The guitar is an amazing instrument and learning a new riff or coming up with a groovy chord progression is just really great to me. You gotta keep it fun.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Winn Alexander, I’m a singer/songwriter – born and raised in Oregon. A folk rock troubadour and entertainer performing live shows around the PNW. I also write, record and produce original music. I’m an indie artist paving a path on the northern Oregon coast. I started out busking/street performing when I was a young teen. Taught myself how to play the guitar. Influenced by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Elvis, Chuck Berry. All the great early rock and folk music. My grandpa played upright bass, and was a jazz musician
Dad was a professional singer and performed at local night clubs and mom also played electric bass. So I grew up in a musical family. Soaking it all in from an early age. I went on to form a few bands in Highschool and played local house shows, coffee shops and party hangouts with friends. I went on to form a few bands that did some recording and played many awesome shows around Oregon and Washington. I love traveling and meeting new people on the road. Bringing the songs to a new audience is always a lot of fun. Currently at 35 I’m performing solo again although I occasionally put together a full band for a gig. I’m also recording a new unplugged original folk album. Excited to get it out there for people to hear. I’m very lyrical and really think people would dig the songs if they gave them a listen. You can find me and my previous band Silverhill anywhere you stream your music.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I had grit and determination, it wasn’t easy and you have to really want it. My advice is to keep on keeping on, don’t let others discourage you. Practice consistently, don’t take others criticism too seriously but be open to new ideas. Listen to all kinds of music and get yourself out there. Love yourself.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking to collaborate on music or film projects. I enjoy the recording process and helping bring new songs and ideas to life. You can definitely reach out and get ahold of me through my website at winnalexander.com
