Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Worlasi Langani. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Worlasi, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
HUNGER,
I was raised by a single mom, and she mostly complained about money and not having much. I always had the edge to make sure that I keep going no matter what because I could see how hungry she was to be successful or to make ends meet. So I’d say the hunger to survive where I’m from and the resilience and discipline that I’ve experienced from my mom.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Worlasi and I come from the Volta region of Ghana. I have two loves – painting & music. I have been painting my whole life – childhood, teens, throughout school and into my tertiary level of education. But music, I started falling in love with music in my teens. I started off by playing around with FL studio and recording some songs through a normal Website. It was challenging but exciting and I couldn’t stop myself to continue creating. Every single time I did I felt brand new. And that feeling has never changed for me, even to this day.
The most exciting thing about being an artist – a musician, or a painter – is creating new things and bringing things to life. It fills me up and I learn so much from it. I connect to people a lot from it. Over the years, I’ve been making music that is related to the struggles of the people of Ghana due to the incompetence of our leaders, the mismanagement and the misuse of resources the intentional negligence towards our grievances. Their no hesitation in holding corruption and thievery offenders accountable, and so on and so forth. It has been a very eye-opening experience. I have connected with a lot of people, and it has made me realize how it feels to use my creativity and my art to improve upon my surroundings, and the surroundings of others now and even for when I’m gone.
I am currently working on an album which is a fusion of some Ghanaian traditional Music called Adgadze from the Ewe people (my people). I always do my best to inculcate my language in my music ever since I started making music. And now, I believe it’s time for me to also inculcate my peoples’ tradition into the production of the songs as well. I will call this the GBADZA energy. I am also working on a painting exhibition which I have been doing also over the years but this time around I’ll try to show the beauty in our Ghanaian fabrics and the simple but complicated pattern they possess. The color schemes of these fabrics are also quite intriguing to watch.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most impactful times in my journey was when I was down and felt there wasn’t anyway to keep going. I say this because once I come out of it, I become a brand new person. I hold this very dear to me because without it, I don’t see the growth and will be stuck. I won’t learn anything new and being stagnant might put you down but once you get out of it, you are not stagnant. I look at it as levels in a game – with each level it gets harder but you also get smarter along the way. Once you stop playing the level though, you are stuck. I love this game though so I’ll keep playing till the end.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My current struggle is networking. It’s not easy being a creative, tackling the creative side & then also networking and handling the business side of things. I believe that I need a team to expand and so I can spread my creative abilities. It’s a bit hard to find because working with people is not as easy as working alone. With networking, you might not even need money you just have to work with partners, who have the same perspective or are in alignment to your ideas your growth and your success.
