Meet Wuqiong Shang

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wuqiong Shang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Wuqiong , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
As an industrial designer, experience is one of your greatest assets. You gain it continually through project development, across various areas such as design, engineering, and even marketing. Each experience deepens your understanding of the process and strengthens your decision-making skills. Don’t worry about making mistakes or asking questions early on; they’re part of the journey. Over time, as you accumulate more experience, your confidence naturally grows.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an industrial designer with 8 years of experience, during which I’ve successfully brought products from concept to market and received positive feedback from customers. I enjoy creating tangible solutions and solving problems throughout the design process. Industrial design is my ideal career because it allows me to channel my passion into my work. By blending aesthetics with engineering, I strive to achieve the perfect balance, creating products that are both beautiful and highly functional. In my free time, I love traveling around the world to experience diverse cultures and perspectives.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first essential quality is humility. Graduating from school is only the beginning; the real learning happens on the job. What you gain in the field builds on what you learned in school, helping you continuously improve.

The second quality is curiosity. Don’t limit yourself to what you already know or what you’re currently working on—stay open to exploring different areas, even those unrelated to design. Often, the best inspiration comes from unexpected fields.

Finally, teamwork is crucial. Industrial design is rarely a solo effort. While designers develop concepts, bringing them to life requires collaboration. Good teamwork makes the entire process smoother and more effective, and a supportive team elevates the final result.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I step back and take a break. I make it a priority to work out almost every day, which really helps relieve mental pressure and keeps me physically active. I’d recommend finding a physical activity you enjoy, whether it’s at the gym or something outdoors like biking. These activities can clear your mind and often lead to fresh perspectives or solutions for the challenges you’re facing.
