We were lucky to catch up with Wynter Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Wynter , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My unbelievable resilience is 100% wholeheartedly accountable to my marvelous Mother. She has had a profound impact on shaping my strength and resilience. Her struggles as a single mom, and her ability to endure them, have clearly inspired me in numerous ways. As a single mother myself I feel well equipped to master this thing called motherhood. I’ve learned to make do with what is present and make miracles every Thanksgiving. Without her my sense of independence and confidence would not exist.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My most exciting and most fulfilling job is being mother to four exceptional children. Two boys (Harlem 10 & Bronx 17), as well as two girls Maddy Manhattan 15 & Brooklyn 20). They have been in a Mandirin immersion program since kindergarten. Most recently I’ve created a script for a sitcom inspired by the children’s experiences being black in an Asian world. It is currently being shopped around in hopes of beginning production in the very near future.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Curiosity, adaptability and collaboration I feel are the main three qualities you must possess in order to achieve the most out of life. Never ever stop asking why , and how? No such thing as a dumb question! Changing environments and unexpected challenges is vital to embrace the problems that push you out of your comfort zone. You’re going to need a team! Learn from others to get different skills and experiences. Never give up on your dreams NO MATTER WHAT! By any means necessary!

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
As of now I’m in the survival boat! Trying to keep afloat of maintaining a household, working full time, PTA meetings Doctor/Dental appointments, soccer, basketball, cheerleading and football, balanced nutritious meals everyday not to mention emotional support and homework help! I’ve been trying to put my oxygen mask on first, make sure it’ fits properly, and then assist the children. I’m just now understanding what that looks like.
