Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Xavier Damo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Xavier , so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
Oh man I love this question because the haters and nay sayers are my biggest motivators. They don’t know my physical, emotional or mental strengths. They don’t know my daily routine. They don’t know what kind of work I’m putting in when I’m on the side not posting about my life on social media. Only you know yourself about your strengths and weaknesses. To be stronger you develop those weaknesses. Haters are your biggest supporters they share your work to other people which in turn will bring supporters. Love your haters, give them a show, give them something to talk about
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Well professionally I work at a hospital as a tech in electrodiagnostics. This is my side business doing photography as a freelance for events, live music, night clubs, engagements etc. I started in 2019 while deployed overseas taking videos of my adventures while I wasn’t on duty. In 2021, thats when I started photography and it was just a hobby at first to try to understand the ins and outs of using a camera and editing softwares. Now I’m really trying to have this as my future full time professionally. Its something I really enjoy and have a passion for
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
3 things that were impactful for me: 1. Being social – in this field you have to connect with other members whether its promoters, businesses, managers, media members because you have to see whats out there, you have to ask questions to improve or to do more, you have to build a connection to get your foot in the door. 2. You have to grind – you have to put in the work to reach out to businesses, to research what skills you have to improve on for yourself to be better, being able to plan and schedule for yourself. None of this is a routine, once that first “gig” is done now its alright whats the next project without having a significant gap because you have to be able to survive if you’re trying to make this your only professional full time job. 3. Practice, Practice, Practice- whether its taking photos, photo editing, video editing, directing actors, lighting techniques etc
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would love to connect, partner, or collaborate with any media team, media manager, or freelancer. There’s a lot to learn with editing, equipment, technical skills, interpersonal skills and more. The events are always different. I want to continue to get into the scene more, but really to be able to travel as well.
