We recently connected with Ximena Uribe and have shared our conversation below.
Ximena, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
This is something I work on constantly. I find my confidence and self-esteem to be deeply rooted in art.
Acting was one of the things that gave me wings when I was a teen. It felt like, for the first time, I really understood something. That I could have educated discussions and even have a valuable opinion. And that feeling bled into many other areas of my life making me very confident.
But it doesn’t always have to be a grand gesture for it to feed my self-esteem. Every day I make sure I wake up as early as possible to write three pages of anything. While this sounds unrelated to confidence or self-esteem, giving myself the value of making the effort of waking up early and letting myself write truly anything has done wonders for my self.
We don’t realize how important art can be to the self. Art is an abstract place to explore, where right and wrong don’t rule, but the openness to express does. That space to say anything makes your voice feel powerful and that is what can make someone ver self-assured.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Ximena Uribe and I am an actor and filmmaker. I have been focused professionally on acting and filmmaking for the past few years and it has been quite a ride.
I have been able to do some short films, a feature film and a handful of staged readings by really amazing independent storytellers.
Most recently the feature film “Itch!”, which I played a supporting character in, premiered at the Dances with Films Festival. I also had the honor of working on the staged reading of “The Assembly” for 6th Fest, an amazing climate change theatre festival.
And as a filmmaker, I’m currently in post-production for my short film “Wilder Greene”, which I wrote and directed.
I’m constantly working on new things and different things so if you wanna keep up with what I’m doing you can always follow me on instagram @ximenauribev.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Let me preface my three most important qualities by saying that I don’t think there’s a one size fits all or magic recipe to being an artist.
These qualities were the ones that people would praise me for when I first started, or different teachers and mentors told me to be better at.
I think my three most important skills and qualities are confidence, problem solving skills and concentration. The mix of these three are of outer most importance when you’re an actor, and one relies on the other.
As actors we’re being constantly scrutinized or being put on the spot and we have to be able to pivot with confidence quickly. All without getting lost in the chaos of filming or putting on a show.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Many books have been extremely valuable in my development. Books such as “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”, “Acting; A Handbook of the Stanislavski Method” and “A Catcher in the Rye”. But as of lately a book that has led me to leaps of growth in my independent development is “Directing Actors” by Judith Weston.
This book has taught me to stay curious even when my job takes place at home with a blue backdrop, a ring light and a dream. It has also taught me so much about collaboration.
Weston has a great way of demystifying acting techniques, explaining them in a way that is digestible. This is a great book for any actor that feels lost in the grandeur nature of acting books.
