We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yalonda Owens . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yalonda below.
Yalonda, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
In the wedding industry businesses can be extremely friendly when one is the customer. I found that friendliness dissipated when I was asking businesses to be my customer (advertise with The Vow). Black women are often the customer and when finding myself as one of – if not the only- business headed by a woman of color confidence and self belief help assert my presence and gain respect from others. Expertise can help break down biases and preconceived notions. My unique background and experience offer a fresh perspective of solutions. The Vow promotes diversity and inclusivity within the wedding industry. We encourage others to recognize and value different perspectives and backgrounds.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
The Vow Wedding Hub is an app designed to streamline the wedding planning process for engaged couples. It serves as a comprehensive platform, offering a wide range of wedding related services and vendors all in one place. Users can browse through a curated list of venues, photographers, caterers, glorious, make up orders, and other wedding professionals. The app allows couples to compare prices read, reviews, view, portfolios, and book services directly making it easier to plan a memorable and stress-free wedding day. The Vow Wedding Hub app is available in Apple & Google App Store.
It’s an on-line wedding marketplace. When someone asks online, “Where can I find a venue for 200 people? Where can I find a caterer for my wedding? Who plans destination weddings?” The answer is: Look On THE VOW wedding app.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Build Allies and Networks: Seek out allies and mentors who can support and advocate for you. Networking can provide resources, opportunities, and a sense of community.
Seek Continuous Improvement: Keep learning and developing your skills. Staying adaptable and up-to-date with industry trends can enhance your competence and confidence.
Take Care of Yourself: Prioritize well-being. Self-care and maintaining a healthy work-life balance are crucial for sustained success and mental health.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
My ideal collab would be with venues, photographers, caterers, florists, makeup artists, wedding planners, realtors, transportation, entertainers and/ or rental services. Wedding professionals who want to increase their visibility and showcase their portfolio. Collaborating with The Vow Wedding Hub allows these vendors to showcase their services and reach a hyper-targeted audience of engaged couples.
There are cities throughout the country that have a reputation for certain talents. I want St. Louis to be known as a mecca for wedding professionals.
