Meet Yan Sun

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yan Sun. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yan below.

Yan, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Similar to how I navigate my creative journey, developing confidence and self-esteem has come naturally to me. I haven’t used any elaborate strategies; rather, I credit my positive influences on my parents, schoolteachers, university professors, and the many books I’ve read.

Since my childhood, I’ve developed dreams and aspirations, even if they were somewhat unclear during my early years. What’s worth emphasizing is that each time I’ve accomplished something, it has contributed to my self-assurance. These achievements encourage me to believe in my ability.

I am all about constantly improving myself and learning new things. And embracing new learning experiences has made me feel more and more confident over time.

Although it doesn’t have any complexity, my approach to developing confidence and self-esteem has proven to be really effective for me.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a university art professor, and my focus is on teaching painting and drawing classes. Beyond that, I’m also an exhibiting artist. My paintings often get selected for national and international exhibitions. Currently, I’m recognized as a signature artist by both the Oil Painters of America (OPA) and the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA).

One of the most exciting aspects, aside from teaching, is running Yan Sun Art Museum & Gallery. It’s a fine art gallery located in Zanesville, Ohio—a space where artists, art lovers, and art collectors come together to celebrate the beauty of creativity. As active members of the art community, we offer various services:

• Monthly themed art exhibitions and receptions
• Guided tours of the art gallery
• Painting commissions
• Acrylic painting workshops in spring and fall
• Private oil or acrylic painting classes available year-round

The goal of the Yan Sun Art Museum & Gallery is to provide a space where our community can appreciate art from both local and distant talents.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Throughout my journey towards becoming an art professor and artist, there were several key aspects that played a crucial role. Firstly, on a personal level, persistence was principal. Once I set a goal, I dedicated myself to making the utmost effort to achieve it. Even if the process was long and challenging, I remained committed, refusing to give up.

Secondly, in terms of skill development, I have studied the techniques and methods of many artists since my university days. Beyond what I was taught in classrooms, I engaged in extracurricular learning and practice, extending beyond mere completion of assignments.

Thirdly, I am happy about not only obtaining a degree in painting but also in art history. My knowledge of art history has proven invaluable in enhancing my understanding of the creative process, philosophical foundations, and the backgrounds and characteristics of various art movements. When I learn from masters or instruct my own students, I integrate a diverse range of artistic knowledge, recognizing the importance of transcending mere technical skills. This perspective is a facet of experience that I am most eager to share. As an artist, possessing a comprehensive range of knowledge is essential.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I would like to express my gratitude to the many individuals who have played significant roles in my journey of growth. These individuals include my parents, wife, son, teachers and professors, mentors, as well as friends. They have provided me with strength and knowledge. Whenever I have faced challenges at various stages of life, there have always been people from this group by my side. I am especially grateful to my wife, Hong Yin, who has been with me for decades, accompanying me on this artistic journey. She is also a talented artist and art professor. We both teach at the university level and work together to make Yan Sun Art Museum & Gallery a better place for the art community.
