We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yana Korneva a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Yana, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Impostor syndrome follows me constantly. I used to let it get close, but over time, I’ve started pushing away all those comparison-driven thoughts. I always talk to myself and give myself compliments — it helps me stay focused and not get stuck on unimportant things.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a visual artist based in Redmond, Washington. Originally from Belarus, I moved to the United States three years ago and continue to draw creative inspiration from the natural landscapes and cultural heritage of my homeland.
I primarily work with oil paints and soft pastels, exploring themes of nostalgia, solitude, and the quiet beauty of untouched nature. My art reflects a deep personal connection to Belarusian landscapes and traditions.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Consistency and patience.
As a very active person, it’s always hard for me to wait — I want to burn through everything at once. But it doesn’t work that way.
I just want to remind you (and myself) to be more patient with yourself.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My parents, my family. My sisters.
The people who have always supported me since childhood.
No matter the distance, we’re always together.
