Meet Yanira Rubio

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yanira Rubio. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yanira below.

Yanira, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

Definitely my parents, I watched both my parents work until the day they retired. I always thought my parents where hard on us but I now understand that it was a way to show us how to be independent. Nobody owes you anything and it’s up to us to make something of ourselves.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

We are a Mexican owned nail salon and we offer all nail services. The salon is a very upbeat setting where you can be yourself! Getting your nails done while sipping on a cafesito or a michelada is absolutely something that our clients enjoy. We are more than just a nail salon, we cry and laugh with our clients and watch each other grow…. we are family!!

I like to give back to my community and to other wonderful organizations. A few times out of the year I host events that benifit families in need and local small businesses like mine. Networking is something I truly believe in. Running a small business is hard but if we all support one another we can do this! Together we are stronger.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Do your research before you open a business. Check your state rules and regulations and licensing department. It’s important to surround yourself with people who have the same values as you as it will make it easier to have support. Join groups, find a mentor, promote, connect with your community, donate and know your surroundings.
I love to give back to my community and help others with networking events, those same people will eventually tell family and friends about you. Owning a business it’s not for the weak so be proud of yourself and take pride in what you do!

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

The beauty industry is hit and miss, some days I’ll have 9 clients other days I’ll have 4. Trying to figure out ways to bring in clients and bring in revenue is always a challenge but that comes with the territory of owning a business. Doing the foot work is really important, you have to put yourself out there and promote! Have specials and offer other services, you have to be creative. Trying to stay afloat during inflation is definitely a challenge but if you love what you do, you will find a way to keep your business doors open.
