We were lucky to catch up with Yasmine Tatim recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yasmine, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I’ve learned that being the only one in the room is not something that comes as an obstacle but a requirement for effectiveness and success. It is about embracing the fact that out of 8 billion people on earth, there’s only one like you, which proves we’re not here to be the same and create the same way.. Following somebody else’s path might feel safer, but it is actually a waste of that uniqueness.
Embracing my uniqueness allowed me to begin to “swim in the blue ocean” where competition is irrelevant, instead of swimming in the “red ocean” of existing and cookie cutter kind of business.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
When I was 16 a psychiatrist diagnosed me with chronic depression and prescribed antidepressants, saying I’d have to take them for life, otherwise the mood swings, fatigue and crying for no reason would return. I also suffered from asthma since childhood. When I was 25, I moved to Sydney, Australia, and started practicing Yoga regularly. I’d frequently cry in class while breathing deeply and doing hip openers. Later I learned that it is common for that kind of emotional release to happen since we store the energy of unprocessed emotions in the body.
Those releases felt SO GOOD that I realized I missed feeling my feelings. So I stopped taking the antidepressants and started practicing MINDFULNESS. The act of observing my thoughts and feelings without judging them. Since the feelings were finally allowed to be with loving awareness, I began to actually HEAL, instead of numbing. Which is when an emotional wound is felt, seeing, accepted and released, often through tears. You know when it is healed because the symptom doesn’t show up anymore, such as social anxiety for example, and you feel lighter and clearer in your body and mind.
The deepest healing yet happened during a 4 day silent meditation retreat at a Buddhist monastery. By calmly and extensively observing my thoughts I became aware of many wounds and beliefs that made me blind to my inherent happiness and wellbeing. After those 4 days, there was not going back to the toxic choices I used to make.
I left a career in fashion design and a toxic lifestyle behind to study and learn more about the science that helped me heal. Ever since I’ve been on a constant student mode, learning everything about Yoga, Meditation, Holistic healing, Neuroscience, Epigenetics, Quantum Physics… the list goes on.
I’m now ERYT500 Yoga Instructor and Transformative coach. I’m passionate about helping students and clients thrive inside and out, living well and healthy through a range of proactive, healing and preventive measures. This includes movement, mindfulness and coaching techniques to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and how they can improve and facilitate lasting positive change physically, mentally and materially. My approach focuses on creating opportunities for their own breakthroughs and insights through which they identify their own potential to create the lifestyle they truly desire.
I teach my students to align and integrate body, mind and Life, so all aspects of life are in harmony and balance. Many clients come to me with one area doing well to the detriment of others. Perhaps the fitness aspect looks good but there’s still anxiety and relationship issues. Or their professional life is doing well but lack harmony in their physical and mental wellbeing. I’ve learned the power of integrating mind and body myself and that completely changed the results in my career and relationships. Everything in our life is connected. The way your treat your body will affect the way you show up professionally. The way you show up in your career, will affect the way you show up for your relationships.
So I help my clients spot the blindspots that are creating imbalances, from the premise that everybody is worthy of the best and most harmonious lifestyle possible.
To support clients with that integration, I’m working on a 3-week course that will introduce the experience of Body, Mind and Life integration. Week 1 is about movement, week 2 is about mindset shifts, week 3 is about application in Life through action taking. I’m planing to launch Body-Mind-Life Academy in July, until then my website and one-on-one calendar is on pause. I’m excited to launch a new website, new course and open up my calendar for clients again soon!
I also have 3 retreats coming up soon. 2 in California and one in Mexico. Details will be on my website soon.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
We’ll never be ready or know everything we need to know. We are ALWAYS learning and
growing. It truly never ends. When we say “I’m done, I know it all” we stop learning.
I learned from Buddhist teachings to be always with a beginner mindset, like a child curious
and open to learn. I learn from clients all the time. It is not about knowing it all or about being an
expert, but being willing to make mistakes and learn from them, day after day, and
most importantly, never give up.
Another important thing I’ve learned is to observe what brings me more joy, and to focus
on those things. To stop saying “I have to” or “should to” and make decisions because “I choose to”.
The more we become sovereign of our own joy and fulfillment, more empowered we feel
to keep going, even when things get challenging.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is somebody who has had enough of playing small and feeling limited.
They’re sick of feeling sick physically, mentally and how it affects their life in general.
They want more quality of life.
My ideal client is ready to make a change and question their current way of thinking and living.
They know there’s another way and want to feel strong and healthy in their body and mind so they
can explore greater possibilities in their life. They’re ready to invest time and resources in their
own growth and wellbeing because they know it’ll pay off 10-fold.
