We recently connected with Yeshua Perez and have shared our conversation below.
Yeshua, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Music. Music might be the most important artform in my life. There is so much emotion and passion in music and it feels me with feelings of euphoria. In those moments, I fall into my own little fantasy world and I am inspired to recreate the images, moments, and feelings that I experience. If ever I experience a creative drought, it’s music that always revives me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Though I started out life as a sketch artist, my interests in other forms of art continued to grow. I’ve dabbled in sculpting, calligraphy, writing, painting, movie making , etc. But over the past few years my focus has been photography. I love the idea of creating and capturing a moment. Freezing an emotion for all time. Developing stories and worlds from a single image. It’s beautiful to me.
Everyone has something beautiful inside of them. Most of us have been taught to hide it or have been prevented from even recognizing it exist. Through photography, I can attempt to bring that beauty to the surface. Bring those dormant feelings to the surface with the subjects permission of course. Maybe I can only get to smile for a moment, but if I can catch that moment, then it will live on forever.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Thirst for knowledge – In order to develop in any area you need to willing to learn as much as possible on the topic or skill. Your need to learn needs to reach obsessive levels in order to retain what you’ve learned. This knowledge will give you the tools to succeed when you hit a wall. Something we all experience at various times.
Passion –
Loving what you do may be the most important need you possess. Passion will keep you motivated on the bad days. It will solidify your will to continue. Passion can make your dreams bulletproof.
Patience –
No matter your chosen path, it will take time. It should. If it’s that important and powerful, time will be needed to perfect it. Patience can and may need to be limitless in order to achieve your greatest goals. It is a skill that can be learned but must be trained. And it is absolutely necessary.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I stop. I stop whatever it is I’m doing and reflect on what my mind and heart needs. If I am overwhelmed, maybe I’m taking on too much. Maybe I didn’t plan things out correctly. Maybe it’s an indicator that now is not the right time to do what I feel is needed.
You have to take a break, breathe and re-evaluate your goal. I try hard not to “beat myself” up about it but it happens sometimes. Sometimes I need that feeling to encompass me so I can feel its true weight. Then, I can put it down and push forward as intended.
The feeling of being overwhelmed can slow you down but you can prevent it from beating you. Your will is stronger. You will push past it. Just be patient.
