We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yessíca Torres a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Yessíca, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
In my journey, I have encountered adversity, particularly in the form of individuals who may attempt to undermine my contributions based on preconceived notions about my identity as a woman and a minority. However, I firmly believe in the power of visualizing artistic concepts to fruition, creating intrinsic value within my gallery exhibitions. By championing artists who embody both intrigue and influence, I have remained resolute in my dedication to shaping the contemporary art market; first in Los Angeles and now in Austin, Texas.
My resilience in the face of adversity is rooted in my belief of the transformative power of art and the enduring relationships I have forged with both artists and collectors. This commitment, backed by a decade of experience and a vision that reaches beyond conventional boundaries allowing me to continue my journey as an Art Advisor and Consultant.
At the end of the day, there will always be someone who cares more about your demise than their own successes; I simply cannot waste time on those individuals. My abuela used to say “Verás lo que haré”, which translates to “You will see what I will do”. Which to me means when I’m in a position of challenge, it time to show everyone exactly what I can do.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My passion lies in meticulously selecting artists who exhibit extraordinary talent, innovation, and immense potential. My mission is to bring these exceptional artists into the spotlight and connect them with a supportive art community and our esteemed clientele of collectors.
Over the past decade, I’ve grown Dabster Arts Inc. from a single local gallery in Ventura, California to an internationally recognized Art Company with locations in Ventura, Los Angeles, Austin, and Mexico City. My next target is to expand to Miami, Florida, where we can tap into the vibrant and diverse art scene in one of the most recognized art cities in the world.
After almost 15 years in business I am planning a rebrand of my company designed to reflect my cultural heritage and community. Coinciding with the new gallery brand launching in January will also be the announcement of our Art Fair in Los Angeles. Additional plans for my company in 2024 is all about sustaining the value of contemporary art in an obviously fickle market and unstable social climate. Having survived the Covid closures, I’m confident that my dedication to innovation, cultural diversity, and the growth of both artists and collectors will continue to drive the success of my galleries.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Firstly, the ability to keenly observe and learn has been instrumental. In this dynamic realm, I’ve always held onto the advice once imparted by a mentor: “Never assume you’re the smartest person in the room.” This wisdom underscores the ever-present opportunity to glean insights from others. I’ve closely followed and emulated those who have achieved success, relentlessly seeking to absorb their knowledge and expertise.
Secondly, the art of managing risk versus reward has played a crucial role. Determining when to take bold risks and when to adopt a more conservative approach is an intricate dance. While I’ve certainly made mistakes along the way, I’ve also had my share of calculated successes. The art world is replete with opportunities that require strategic assessment, and mastering this balance has been key.
Lastly, I’ve come to understand the importance of measuring success through a multifaceted lens. It’s not solely about tangible achievements but also about the intangibles. The ability to work on my terms, manage my time, and sustain longevity in a field where many startups falter is a unique form of success. Recognizing that my journey has been one of continuous progress, regardless of whether I’ve reached my ideal destination, has been a valuable lesson.
For those who are early in their journey in the art industry, I offer this advice:
Embrace Continuous Learning: Always remain open to learning from others. The art world is a diverse and ever-evolving realm, and there’s wisdom to be gained from artists, collectors, and peers. Attend exhibitions, engage in discussions, and absorb knowledge like a sponge.
Strategic Risk-Taking: Understand that risk is inherent in the art industry, but it can lead to substantial rewards. Develop a discerning eye for when to seize opportunities and when to exercise caution. Take calculated risks, and be prepared to learn from any setbacks.
Measure Your Progress: Success in the art world is multifaceted. Don’t solely gauge your journey by conventional milestones. Recognize the unique achievements, personal growth, and resilience that mark your path. Celebrate the small victories and understand that progress takes time.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
In the realm of art collecting, the ideal client is someone whose passion for art is the driving force behind their acquisitions. They possess a profound appreciation for the intrinsic value of both the artwork and the artist. These individuals are motivated by a deep love for art and a desire to invest not just in pieces, but in the creative journey and narrative of the artist.
Moreover, an ideal client in the art world is one who not only values art but also values the expertise of an advisor. They actively engage in a collaborative dialogue, attentively listening to and trusting the advisory process. This mutual trust and alignment allow for a synergistic relationship where the collector’s vision and the advisor’s expertise converge to curate collections that are not only valuable but emotionally resonant.
