Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yingwen Jie. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yingwen, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
You should be the one who knows best what you truly enjoy.
By starting with the things you love, you will naturally discover areas or tasks where you are more efficient and feel more motivated — and that might point to one of your strengths.
This process is rarely smooth and often involves continuous trial and error.
But it is precisely through this journey that you can uncover your potential development paths and find your true goals.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My area of focus is industrial interaction design. What excites me the most is studying how human behavior patterns are influenced, altered, or even created through excellent design, and how new connections between people and external objects can extend human perception. I am currently practicing this design philosophy in the project “MONICA,” a collaboration between RCA and OPPO that was selected for development. The project was exhibited at the 2024 London Design Festival. It is currently in the conceptual stage, with partial technical validation completed and further development planned.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe the three most important qualities are fundamental knowledge, imagination, and execution.
Fundamental knowledge includes engineering fields such as mechanics and electronics, as well as an understanding of current industry developments. It serves as the foundation that supports and enables our imagination.
The second is imagination, which corresponds closely to the first. Mastering fundamental knowledge should never lead us to believe that we know everything about the world. Imagination is what allows designers to explore beyond the realm of the known.
The third is execution. The value of an idea must be realized through creation in order to be understood. The realization of ideas and the mastery of skills both rely on strong execution.
For newcomers, it is important to explore freely and boldly, and to continuously document every step of the journey. Skills and experience are accumulated through practice; ideas are refined through repeated testing; execution ability is strengthened through action.
The development of anything, including a person’s growth, is difficult to predict. Therefore, we must act first and grow through practice and trial and error.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
A needle must pierce with its sharp end. Everyone has their own strengths, and those strengths should be developed to become even better and more distinctive.
Being well-rounded is a state that is difficult for people to truly reach — while it is not entirely out of reach, it is not the sign that leads to success.
I once participated in a headphone development project. When evaluating the establishment of an online community, I realized that my knowledge in that area was still limited. However, I was stronger in technology, product form, and interaction design, and I could dedicate more time and achieve more within each unit of time.
Therefore, I recruited teammates who were familiar with community building to work together on the project. This not only accelerated the project’s progress but also allowed me to stay focused on my technical work without distraction.
Success comes from doing one thing well. If you want to do many things well, it must be achieved step by step.
I am not opposed to developing oneself comprehensively, but it is important to recognize where your true strengths lie — and to let the light that shines the brightest shine first.
