We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yotam Monjack. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yotam below.
Yotam, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Being a third-generation designer, my passion for design, art, museums, and aesthetics began to develop from a very young age.
My mother took me to the MOMA in New York City for the first time when I was thirteen years old. I observed a display of lighting fixtures designed by German industrial designer Ingo Maurer there. I found a great deal of beauty, sarcasm, and humor in his work. I knew then and there that I wanted to be a designer.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I was born and raised in Tel Aviv a Metropolis City full of art, architecture, design, fashion aesthetic, and great lifestyle. I was identified as having dyslexia when I was a kid, and I struggled in school. hours and hours of diligent study to receive a C or C- on the test. I came to the US at the age of 21 after serving in the IDF since I was a dual citizen. When I initially relocated to the US, my English was not good enough, thus communication was difficult. But in 2012, when I began studying industrial and graphic design at university, I found that design gave me a straightforward way to communicate with people everywhere and provided me with a simple means of expressing myself in a universal language. Things came easily to me for the first time in my life, and I graduated with honors.
As a designer, I enjoy working with small- to medium-sized companies and entrepreneurs to convey their ideas through unique visuals. I believe that good design is a dialogue and interaction that combines aesthetics and functionality. There needs to be a story, and that tale is unique to my clines, I’m simply the one who translates that into a visual format.
I cherish the relationships I have with my clients because we work together to tell their stories as collaborators in the creative process—hearing and listening are two very different things. I therefore work in a very close-knit, personal manner. Makes them feel their needs and worries are being acknowledged. There are moments when I feel like a psychologist. I am there to support and encourage them all the way to their destination because I am incredibly sympathetic to the sentiments they are experiencing.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
When I moved to the US everybody called me “Yotam what did that mean” as I kept asking questions all the time.
I am a listener!
While someone is speaking, they are providing you with more and more knowledge, which allows you to base your decision-making on that information. that’s why I believe the procedure of working with a client is really straightforward;
Ask questions. Listen. Absorb.
Furthermore, I believe that a trait is something that you either have or do not have from birth. A skill is anything that can developed and perfected through practice. And above all that, there is passion. Are you acting on your instincts or just your gut?
my point is, every time I see a beautiful design I get that boom in my stomach.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am a people person, as I have stated. Everyone has a story to share, and since I enjoy working with people, I’m seeking those who are open to having conversations rather than a debate. Who are willing to develop their ideas and convey them in a meaningful way through visuals, and who have an open mind to exploring the boundaries of creativity and innovation.
