We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Young Han a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I build businesses and help others build theirs. I’ve been an entrepreneur my entire life starting my first business, a restaurant, as soon as I turned 18 years old. I’ve succeeded and failed many businesses in my life time while also working for incredible companies in between endeavors. I’ve always been fascinated with learning about different industries, skills needed, and sub cultures; and finding creative ways to solve problems.
This has led me to having many business experiences and also having many job experiences. Which in turn made me a true “jack of all trades, master of none, still better than a master of one” when I finally became a business coach. As a business coach having experienced such a large variety of businesses, industries, job functions, and people I’m able to pull from a lot of relevant experience to help a wide variety of owners. I’m also able to use those experiences to help me build my own.
My passion is building businesses and helping others create their own entrepreneurial ventures. I have been an entrepreneur my entire life launching my first business, a restaurant, when I turned 18. Since then I have had both successes and failures building my own businesses, while gaining priceless experience working for incredible companies like Starbucks, Apple and Philz Coffee. I have always been fascinated with learning about different industries, sub cultures and skills to achieve and solve problems.
I am currently growing a virtual business community called “Owners Club”. This is a space where I help growth minded business owners turn their passions into profits, whether thy are growing towards their first million in annual revenue or beyond. I am also about to release my first book about how to scale your business to the first million dollars in annual revenue. The book will come out by end of 2023!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
During my entrepreneurial journey, I believe these 3 skills/qualities have contributed most to my success as a business coach/owner:
1. Network to increase net worth: Networking is a learnable skill that you can piratic and get better at. After years of running my own businesses, the one thing that I have always relied on is my strong community of other owners. The world works on relationships and nothing levels you up faster than having the right network and leveraging that network to grow your company
2. Ruthless prioritization: My entire coaching business is based on this concept. Be accountable for the work you do, every hour of the day. Think of hours like cash and budget it accordingly for your business and life.
3. Accept failure and move on: If you’re not failing and learning from at least 50% of things you’re doing you’re not in growth mode. You have to be willing to try and fail many times over within your business before you can expect success.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
My favorite business book is ‘The Hard Thing about Hard Things’. It is such a good example of the ups and downs of building a business.
I am also writing my own book, actually ! The name is still a work in progress but I am combining decades of business operations and ownership experience into a book. Here is a rough excerpt. ”Make Business Boring!” I’m serious. The phrase is a shock factor to evoke negative connotations and help someone change how they think about their business. But I mean it: philosophically, iteratively, figuratively. Everyone says, “I hate boring meetings,” and, “I hate boring presentations,” but that’s actually what you want. When you’ve got things dialed into your business so you know what’s going to happen before it happens, you can grow the business with or without you. Then you have some freedom. Not boring! In order to make your business operate with or without you you must get into a rhythm of understanding your business lifecycle. If you know the average value of a deal is X, your efforts to acquire new customers is usually Y, the seasonal factors usually mean Z, then you probably can identify the problems three months before they occur. We know our financials, bookkeeping, effort, and operations, and it is no longer necessary to adjust the life of the business to those variables.
