Meet Yu (Zoe) Cui

We recently connected with Yu (Zoe) Cui and have shared our conversation below.

Yu (Zoe) , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I discovered my purpose by viewing life as an act of publishing. Every day, we share our thoughts and words, contributing to the world around us. It’s crucial to be mindful of what we put out into the world. My purpose is to publish my ideas and amplify the voices of others through various mediums beyond language—such as design, art, initiatives, and interactions.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

As an independent designer, I’m currently working on a project called “Take Our Time,” which explores the value of time within a capitalist framework where time becomes measurable and tradable. This ongoing project involves engaging in 5-minute conversations about time with people at various sites in London, including Reference Point, Barbican Library, and Liverpool Street, among others. These conversations are live transcribed and printed, and the interactions are documented as receipts, recording the time spent together and the full conversation, rather than a monetary price.

Additionally, a new publication project set to launch this summer will address the unique censorship system in Chinese cinema.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Focus, intuition, and risks.

A mind that’s always comparing lacks the ability to reveal one’s true self. It’s crucial to cultivate focus and mindfulness. This involves setting aside the habit of comparing yourself to others. A focused mind is key to creativity and freedom.

Always follow your gut. Think of your journey as being on a boat: whether you row the boat or not, the river is flowing and carrying you forward. Your intuition is like the river’s current, guiding you even when you’re unsure of the destination.

Taking risks, even small ones, can open doors to unexpected opportunities and learning experiences. It’s important to approach these ventures with an open mind and a willingness to learn from failures.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am actively seeking to collaborate with Chinese film directors and writers based in the US and UK for my new project themed around the Chinese film industry and its unique cinematic language. As a Chinese designer, I would like to connect with like-minded creatives to explore and highlight the distinct narratives and artistic expressions within Chinese cinema in the upcoming project. I hope that there can be a vibrant creative community where our voices are amplified. Please reach out to me via Instagram @zozomoloko.
