Meet Yuhao Wang

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yuhao Wang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Yuhao , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

Imposter syndrome is one of the things that has haunted me the most during my time as an artist. I sometimes refuse to charge for commissions or willingly do the work for almost half of the original price simply because I am dissatisfied with the quality of my work. Now, I have become more confident as an artist, not only because of how much I have improved, but most importantly because I’ve learned not to do the right thing for the wrong reason. I also try not to blame myself for things that are not in my control. The process of overcoming imposter syndrome can take a while, but it is possible if we start to realize how often we blame ourselves for unreasonable expectations and goals.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name is Andy Wang, and I’m from China. I moved to the U.S. at 14 to pursue my studies, and it was during my second year of high school that my passion for art truly began to flourish. After graduating, I attended ArtCenter College of Design to become a professional illustrator and story artist.

As an artist, I thrive on creating action-packed illustrations that emphasize narrative through lines, colors, and shapes. I specialize in visual development and character illustrations, and I’m excited to share that I will soon be graduating from ArtCenter. My latest graduation project is one of the most passionate endeavors I’ve undertaken, and I can’t wait to reveal it!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Be passionate. As artists, our passion is one of the most important elements of our work. It defines the directions we choose during our creative journey and keeps us motivated with fresh ideas.

Listen to mindful feedback. Throughout this journey, we will encounter various voices and opinions from different perspectives. While some feedback is helpful, others may be harsh or unreasonable. As creative individuals, our ability to problem-solve is what truly defines us as artists.

Enjoy the process. Make sure to embrace the things you’re working on and find joy in the creative process. This passion will fuel your growth and inspire your work.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

For me, a flood of thoughts, feelings, and ideas constantly swirls in my mind, often leaving me feeling overwhelmed and mentally exhausted. We tend to put unnecessary pressure on ourselves due to societal expectations, competition with peers, and the high standards we set for ourselves. While it’s not always easy to simply “take a break,” having a good friend or partner to talk to can be incredibly helpful. Reaching out for professional support is also important and effective when things start to feel out of hand.
