We recently connected with Yuhui Qi and have shared our conversation below.
Yuhui, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
To keep my creativity alive, I immerse myself in diverse experiences and continuously seek inspiration from various sources. I regularly explore new technologies, engage with different art forms, and stay curious about emerging trends. Additionally, I find that collaborating with others—whether they are fellow creatives or professionals from different fields—can spark fresh ideas and perspectives.
I also dedicate time to reflection and experimentation, allowing myself to explore unconventional ideas without the pressure of immediate results. This practice helps me maintain a sense of wonder and excitement in my work. By staying open to new experiences and continuously challenging myself, I ensure that my creativity remains dynamic and evolving.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a creative designer & multidisciplinary artist whose work intersects art, science, and technology. My focus is on interaction design, encompassing interactive arts, installations, experience design, and interface design. My goal is to create immersive experiences that challenge perceptions by merging innovative technologies with artistic expression.
Recently, I’ve been delving into projects that push the boundaries of how these fields can intersect, aiming to inspire and engage audiences in new ways. My work continues to evolve, with a focus on creating art that resonates on multiple levels, encouraging viewers to reflect and explore their own perceptions of the world.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three key qualities have been instrumental in my journey: a passion for discovery, a strong foundation in design principles, and a deep understanding of technology.
A passion for discovery has driven my exploration of diverse fields, leading me to blend art, design, and technology in innovative ways. This constant desire to learn and experiment keeps my work fresh and relevant.
A strong foundation in design principles is crucial, as it forms the backbone of all creative work. Whether it’s understanding composition, color theory, or user experience, having these principles at your fingertips enables you to create work that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.
A deep understanding of technology has been another cornerstone of my practice. The integration of technology into art and design opens up limitless possibilities for creating interactive, immersive experiences. Staying curious and exploring new technological advancements will set your work apart and keep you at the cutting edge of your field.
For those early in their journey, I advise focusing on continuous learning and experimentation. Embrace challenges as opportunities to grow, build a solid foundation in design principles, and never shy away from exploring new technologies.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
Balancing your strengths with improving weaker areas is essential.
Focusing on your strengths allows you to excel and stand out, like how my expertise in interactive design and technology has significantly contributed to my success. However, working on areas where you’re less skilled can open new opportunities and enhance your versatility.
A key example is when I was involved in a project that required skills outside my usual expertise. I invested time in learning new technologies and collaborating with experts. This effort not only improved the project’s outcome but also broadened my capabilities.
In summary, combining a focus on your strengths with efforts to grow in weaker areas creates a well-rounded skill set, enabling you to adapt to various challenges and achieve long-term success.
