We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yui Shibata. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yui below.
Hi Yui, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I am not fully optimistic but I’m trying to be optimistic as much as possible. But I also think it is not a bad thing to be pessimistic, and accepting pessimistic is how I become optimistic. One of my comedian friends I admire told me that all human beings are easily negative because of instinct. He said, “Being pessimistic is the gift from your ancestor, and this is the way you protect yourself from danger”. For example, you would never go into the cave where a wild bear lives. Why? Because you imagine that you would get killed by the bear. But I guess no one would tell you you’re pessimistic. How about the situation you want to ask an attractive person for a date? You would imagine that he/she might say no to you. Then, some people would tell you that you are pessimistic. These two situations I mentioned above are the same. We are born thinking in a negative way to protect ourselves. That’s it. So, let’s be optimistic!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a Japanese actor based in Los Angeles. In my film actress career, Luckily, I’ve worked in numerous movies and TV shows including Remi award-winning film “The God Chair” and The Daytime Emmy Award-winning show “The Bay”. I also appreciate that the upcoming film “Day to Night” I’m starring as the lead role Aimee is becoming a hot topic in the media. And “Go West” – the thrilling traveling show on the KXLA network- is another level of drama. Today, I would like to introduce the TV show I’m currently working on “Go West”. “Go West” is a new style of travel show featuring rare information from the tourist’s point of view. This TV program has been aired since 2012 and is known as a long-term successful show. After I took a place as the lead cast, the style of the show became more dramatic and scripted than before. However, the production wanted the show to keep reality, so I required a heavy improvisation skill. Especially, the episode of IPW was one of the hardest but the most exciting episodes we have shoot recently. IPW is a national showcase of America driving $5.5 billion in future travel to the United States. There were only people invited by U.S. Travel Association, and international celebrities at the event. Also, we were able to film inside of the Universal Studio Hollywood where the most difficult for any media to get a permit to shoot. I was impressed by this incredible environment.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Ok, this is an interesting question because there are tons of qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey and could be advice for people. It is hard to choose three, but let’s say 1. Making steady effort 2. Obsession 3. Flexibility. 1. Making steady effort
This is the basic advice but also most people are easy to fail. Human is made to be lazy. That is why there are not many real successful people in the world and Shohei Ohtani is such a legend. I don’t like hard work either, but I always tried to make the exercise I didn’t want to do as a daily habit, so it helped me in my journey as an actor.
2. Obsession
If you want to accomplish your goal, obsession is a very important quality you need to have, When you fail on the same thing many times, your family and best friends will tell you to give up. But please remember, you are always the last person to believe you and you know how much you want to reach it.
3. Flexibility.
However, sometimes you need to change the direction of your journey. Flexible people are smarter and can be more successful. I don’t say you should give up your dream at some point, but you should be able to listen to other people when you face to obstacle. You might need to do something you don’t want really, but it actually brings a lot of opportunities and lead you the fast way to succeed.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Actors usually need to use their personal experience to bring up their genuine emotions on a scene. This acting technique is called Emotional Recall Trauma, and it’s an essential technique for actors to learn in acting lessons. But it’s dangerous to the actor’s mental health. No one wants to recall bad memories that they broke up with their boyfriend or girlfriend/ their family died. I’m scared when I use the Trauma technique. This is the number one challenge I’ve been facing in my actors life and even now. When I got heartbreak, I always try to feel it deeply, so I can evoke this emotion easily in acting. The other hand, this is a big burden for my mental. I was always seeking the way not to hurt myself too much and still keep emotion. But I realized it is the actors fate to be hurt for authentic performance.
