Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yuko Fukushima. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Yuko, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
For example, on projects such as CHRIZ AMAYA, a British musician, and creative shoots in Santa Monica and San Diego, I honed my ability to convey emotion and character visually, making an impact even when I stood out in the room. These experiences strengthened my adaptability, professionalism, and unique perspective, allowing me to thrive in international and diverse creative environments. Thanks to these skills, my performances have been all-encompassing, maintaining the precision of a craftsman and always creative. On projects like CHRIZ AMAYA a British musician, or creative shoots in Santa Monica and San Diego I developed my love for visually telling the story of emotion & character who often stands out in a room. Those experiences made me more adaptable, professional and uniquely gifted to succeed in the global diverse international creative hotbeds.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a creative professional which encompasses acting, modeling and visual arts collaborations. I was born and raised in Japan where I learned discipline as well as the art of attention to detail, although it helped a bit that when I was older I studied and worked overseas in Canada,US., UK. These moments were formative in developing mine own philosophy on artistic inspiration, going beyond what can simply be felt as passion and delving into that which allows for creative exploration of new paths; to find new ways to express emotion & storytelling. I am inspired by projects at the intersection of visual art, fashion, music and performance, where I can contribute with authenticity and depth of emotion. I had the chance recently to shoot with CHRIZ AMAYA, creative shoots in Santa Monica and San Diego as well as other modeling / commercial projects.
The thing that excites me most is being able to make work which speaks across cultures and bringing people together through stories. I am proud to research and know each character or concept & make every performance/collab thoughtful and meaningful.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Over the past 12 months, my biggest growth has been developing my ability to convey emotion and character visually across different settings. Prior to working in entertainment, I was in fashion and freelanced as a web writer, while traveling extensively around the world. Those experiences now influence my creativity. I was also studying entertainment business and taking acting classes gave me the opportunity that really allowed me to dive deep into this world. Collaborating with CHRIZ AMAYA and on creative shoots in Santa Monica and San Diego taught me to adapt to different environments while conveying authentic emotion, even without dialogue. These positions have also augmented my ability to adaptability, an eye for detail and confidence in communicating with audiences through visual narrative.
