We recently connected with YUMILKA Soto and have shared our conversation below.
YUMILKA, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
From failure through years of journey!
As an interior designer, It has been crucial for my personal growth to step into situations where I need to prove my knowledge to earn my “spot at the table”, and stay flexible and open-minded.
Always learning from mistakes and taking notes to avoid repeating them, adjusting the plans based on feedback and circumstances.
Overall the best it has been to embrace failures as learning opportunities to refine skills and approaches instead of taking it as something negative that happened to me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m an experienced Interior Designer, I don’t just design spaces; I immerse myself in every step of the process, from concept to execution, ensuring every detail is meticulously planned and executed.
I love spending time with the crew and finding solutions to the surprises we face working on the field. I am known for my unique tropical blend thanks to my Dominican background, more and more people contact me to design their spaces with this twist. My passion and dedication have only grown over the years, starting in 2013 after college. Currently, I am working on a new beach-themed residential project that is going to be a relaxation oasis for the homeowners.
It’s not just a job for me, I continuously strive to improve and stay updated with the latest trends and technologies so I can provide my clients with the best possible service and results.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most important qualities of an interior designer I think are the talent to listen, organization, discipline, and honesty to not overpromise.
Skills-wise I believe the best investment an Interior Designer can make its to learn how to hand draw, the freedom to express an idea by sketching fast, and professionally mastering shades and perspective techniques without the help of technology is key!
My Advice to folks jumping into this field it’s to not wait until you graduate to start! Create your portfolio by volunteering to help friends, working on an internship, volunteering at church or entities offering your talent as an Interior Designer to decorate the space and put your input and great taste into the activities venue until you get your degree and can jump into remodeling and bigger commitments.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
I am facing a significant change in my career as I expand my interior design business to Denver, after establishing a successful business in Orlando for almost a decade. It’s both thrilling and challenging to make a name for myself in a new market.
Building a brand and establishing credibility in a new city can be an uphill climb, however, I am excited about the fresh opportunities to showcase my expertise and create unique and inspiring designs for the beautiful city of Denver. Connecting with local suppliers, architects, and homeowners is a top priority for me, and I am confident that the wealth of knowledge and experience I bring from Orlando will help me establish a foothold in this vibrant city.
