We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yuxi Liu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Yuxi, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
The way to keep my confidence is to continue learning deeply in one field and making progress. In my opinion, a person is not confident in all aspects, only the real understanding can be truly confident. I am a designer. Before I learned art design, I was just a student full of passion and curiosity. In the process of continuous learning, practice, and communication, my confidence has gradually built up. It is a process of enjoying and enriching oneself.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a creative designer with 7 years of design experience. I have worked in various fields of design ranging from graphic design, digital design, product and packaging design, environmental graphic design, etc. I aim to transform every object into moments of delight through a unified approach combining strategy, design, and art direction. Art has been integrated into my life and brings happiness and convenience. I believe that a good design should be made with functionality, rationality, and aesthetics. During these 7 years, I completed many design projects in different fields and styles. I don’t think my design is limited to a certain style, because every work is unique, with different cultural backgrounds and functions, and my design is created according to the needs of the project itself. My works have won multiple international visual arts and design awards, including the A’Design Award, GDUSA, Summit Emerging Media Award, and Indigo Design Award. I exhibited my artwork around the world, including in the U.S., Europe, and China.
My design life seems like a process of breaking through and an exploratory journey to me. The birth of good design work is just like life, which involves repeated failures, self-struggles, and re-starts. Failure is frustrating and painful, but it is also the premise of success. Through continuous learning and creation, I realized that a good designer should be comprehensive, and good work should solve the problem. Functional, innovative, and aesthetic, all three are indispensable elements of a good design. According to this methodology, my design process is more directional and valuable.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Brave, strong, and sincere are the three qualities that have always accompanied me. Youth is the biggest resource for young people, adhere to their preferences and interests, with a sincere heart. Not afraid of failure, accept setbacks. Find a way in failure, I believe this is the process of growth.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My design life seems like a process of breaking through and an exploratory journey to me. The birth of good design work is just like life, which involves repeated failures, self-struggles, and re-starts. Failure is frustrating and painful, but it is also the premise of success. My design career has been hard but lucky. Because in every stage of my life, I have had an advocate by my side. Since childhood, my family has always supported my artistic dream. Until I left my family to study alone in New York, my friends and my partner gave me unlimited support, and they always gave me serious comments and suggestions about my work which helped me a lot. After I graduated, I started my job and met a very professional leader who appreciated me very much and gave me many good opportunities. Under his leadership, I completed many excellent works and have grown up a lot. Recalling my design career, I feel very contented and grateful to everyone who gave me support.
