Meet Yvonne Mccombs

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yvonne Mccombs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Yvonne , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience came from being resilient. Having experienced 8 pregnancy losses and not being satisfied with the lack of information or misdiagnosis. I also continued to have a reoccurring dream of my daughter and son helped me to have great resilience and tenacity.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name is Yvonne and I am a birth, bereavement and postpartum doula. I got started with birthwork after having 8 pregnancy losses, I didn’t want others to experience being treated as another number, nor lack the proper education or resources,to advocate for themselves so I started to seek ways my experience can help. I began volunteering my time with mothers who were experiencing loss and learned about becoming a bereavement doula, I got certified and came alongside families as they navigate through the grief process. This opened the door to me becoming a birth and postpartum doula offering education, emotional and physical support to pregnant mamas. I’d like to say my pain birthed my purpose. I’ve been able to come alongside some amazing mothers and families and currently working on creating self paced grief classes to help those navigate through the grief process in the comfort of their own homes.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back,I think the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were compassion, relatability and resilience. I never gave up on finding the answers to assist, never left a mama’s side seeing to it that she did not feel alone and had information and resources to make informed decisions. Advice I have for mamas experiencing loss is remain hopeful. I experienced 8 loses and had twins. It is possible.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I feel overwhelmed or challenged I pray. My faith in God has grounded me, often reciting 1 Peter 5:7 Cast my cares on the Lord for he cares for me. Especially when it pertains to my clients and life, some things and situations are out of my control but if I cast or throw them to God he catches and takes care of it all! Way better than I ever could.
