Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Zachary Lamothe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Zachary, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I try to see every day as an adventure. Even if I’m researching a topic or an area that I want to investigate further and one day explore, part of the adventure is the planning. Having a list of adventures-in-waiting helps me achieve a goal even when life may seem mundane or routinized.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am the author of five published books. Starting with 2013’s Connecticut Lore, followed by 2016’s More Connecticut Lore, both were released on Schiffer Publishing. In 2020, my book, A History Lover’s Guide to the South Shore, was released, followed by Classic Restaurants of Boston in 2022 and Distilled in Boston in 2023, all on The History Press. After becoming a father, my ability to travel became limited, so I started the website and podcast, Backyard Road Trips, which explores regional travel. Throughout all of my work, I stress the importance of traveling meaningfully on the local level.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My desire for adventure has always been strong. But this can be an adventure in my own backyard. I have always enjoyed the research that goes into my writing as well. The desire for adventure and the love of research, I think, are two impactful qualities. The last quality would be interpersonal skills. During speaking events and through the research process, I love hearing people’s stories and connecting with individuals through my work. For any travel writer, I think these three qualities are a must. It would be hard to be a travel writer without an adventurous spirit, the love of research, and interpersonal skills.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Always- I’m always open to ideas that others may share with me about the next place to check out. Feel free to email me at [email protected] or [email protected].
