We were lucky to catch up with Zahra Amir recently and have shared our conversation below.
Zahra, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from a combination of my passion for staying busy and the values I’ve developed over time, such as discipline and time management. Balancing academics with my henna business requires me to be organized and flexible, but it’s also something I enjoy. I’ve learned to stay committed to both because they each fulfill me in different ways, and being my own boss as an entrepreneur allows me to have control over my schedule.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
For me, henna is an artistic career. Not only does it allow me to do embrace my culture and do what I love, but it also builds so many relationships. I get to speak with each client for about 10 minutes and in that time, I get to learn so much about them. It becomes a sort of therapy session for the both of us as we debrief everything going on in their lives- getting henna done is as relaxing as a spa treatment. Numerous clients are mesmerized by seeing the henna applied and the cool feeling of it on their skin.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Besides the most obvious being dexterity and an eye for design, being a people person and knowing how to communicate is extremely important. Doing henna isn’t just a service, it’s an experience that I am able to bring to each client. To all the new henna artists out there, keep practicing henna application and speaking to people. Learn how to start conversations and know how to read body language. It can be incredibly important in not only building relationships for possible future clients, but also to avoid any awkward situations.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I would love to collaborate with more nail techs! I’ve had an event with another nail tech in the area and it turns out great. Giving clients the opportunity to “treat their hands” was an amazing experience and I’d love to do it again! If you’re interested, please send me a DM on instagram or send me a text @972-244-3541 💗
