We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zakiyah Caldwell Burroughs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Zakiyah , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I derive my resilience from my upbringing in an ambitious family that instilled in me the belief that the sky is the limit. This mindset has shaped my approach to challenges, teaching me to persist and adapt. Despite encountering failures, I’ve learned to view them as redirections towards something better suited for me. Sometimes that is easier said than done. You truly have to get over the initial hurt of failing in order to move past it. Growing up in a family immersed in creative pursuits made it natural for me to embrace my own creative path as a Photographer. This environment nurtured my resilience and passion, allowing me to thrive in a field that truly aligns with who I am.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I like to say I help beauties and brands enhance their businesses through quality and effective imagery.
As a Philadelphia native, I embarked on my photography journey in 2010, quickly gaining some momentum in the industry. I’m not just a photographer; my portfolio proves that i am a Visual Storyteller. From collaborating with companies like Comcast, PECO (Exelon Corp), Longchamp, and Saks 5th Avenue’s Salon & Spa to working alongside NBA star Chris Bosh’s Mr. Nice Tie, my lens has captured the essence of icons like Actor Leon, Singer Kefia Rollerson, fashion legend Gwen DeVoe, and Grammy winners.
What excites me most about my work is the ability to tell powerful visual stories that resonate and elevate brands. Each project is a unique opportunity to create something impactful, whether it’s a corporate collaboration or a personal portrait. The diversity and scope of my work, from corporate giants to individual icons, keep me inspired and continually pushing the boundaries of creativity. I love to bring my clients thoughts out of their heads and into reality for them! It truly feeds me and keeps me energetic in my craft!
Despite the challenges of being an African American female in a male-dominated industry, I thrive, turning hurdles into stepping stones. My attention to detail is has been unparalleled. Ive had the honor of being published in many magazines like Black Enterprise, Sheen, Ebony, Philadelphia Wedding Magazine, Ellements Magazine, and internationally in Cole Magazine (Norway), to name a few. Producing seven covers for POSE Magazine showcases my artistic diversity and dedication.
Beyond accolades, my heart extends to the community through my Kia Cares organization, passionately aiding the homeless. As a three-time award-winning photographer, I’m not just capturing moments for me; I’m creating a legacy. With celebrity clientele and the love i show each of my clients, I aim to leave an permanent mark on the world of photography.
I have also expanded my business to teach other photographers that see value in my skills and knowledge!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities that were most impactful in my journey are resilience, attention to detail, and the ability to connect with people.
1. Resilience:The ability to bounce back from setbacks has been crucial. For those starting out, remember that failure is not the end but a learning opportunity. Embrace challenges and keep pushing forward.
2. Attention to Detail: This has set my work apart, ensuring that every image is polished and professional. To develop this skill, practice mindfulness and always review your work critically. Strive for perfection, but also know when it’s time to move on and keep growing.
3. Connecting with People: Building strong relationships with clients and collaborators has been essential. To improve this, focus on communication and empathy. Listen to others, understand their needs, and deliver beyond their expectations.
For those early in their journey, stay patient and persistent, continually refine your craft, and build meaningful connections. These qualities will serve as the foundation for a successful and fulfilling career.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was teaching me empathy. They showed us every day that being kind to others doesn’t cost a thing. My mother, for instance, would stop to give food to the homeless when I was a kid. She even walked with them to the store and let them buy whatever food they needed. This act of kindness left a lasting impression on my siblings and I. As a result, we’ve always led with compassion and empathy, and I believe it all started with those lessons from my parents.
