Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Zee Underscore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Zee, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I develop my confidence by ensuring that I’m doing everything I want to do (despite fears or reservations) when it comes to any aspect of my life, especially my art. Trusting my first mind is something I have recently stepped into when I began my music career in 2020 upon moving to Kansas City. I knew the only way to get where I wanted to go was to get in front of as many people as possible, so without thought, I started working the Kansas City open mic scene, which started out ROUGH. But through that experience, it afforded me many opportunities, built confidence and stage presence, and allowed me to gain connections I never would have if I let the fears and reservations of being in a completely new unfamiliar place deter me from stepping onto the scene. Knowing tomorrow is not promised allows me to throw second thoughts to the side more easily, clearing the path toward my goals, which enhances my confidence and self-esteem.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I write music, perform, host, and curate events through my company ZNTL Entertainment. I currently have 4 songs out on streaming platforms and am releasing my fifth 11.11.23! By day I am an Electrical Engineer currently working in the power industry. I enjoy youth outreach and engage in regular mentorship activities exposing the upcoming generations to STEAM principals. By night (and every other part of the day haha) I am Zee Underscore, the artist! My company, ZNTL Entertainment recently partnered with KKFI to curate a stage at The Crossroads Music Festival and are working on our third annual pajama party themed concert, ZNTL’s Pajama Jam ’23! We started ZNTL’s Pajama Jam to spotlight local artists who deserve a quality platform to shine! Reach out to zntl.booking@gmail.com for more info and official sponsorship opportunities!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Independence- I have always been a person who thrives on their own. This skill was most important because it allowed me to become truly comfortable in my skin when I moved to a Kansas City for work, all alone in 2020. To improve on being independent, I suggest people take activities they usually do with others (movies, brunch, bars, clubs, concerts etc.) and start doing them alone instead. It is such a different experience when you’re out having fun alone, it totally builds character and humility. Headstrong- My headstrong trait has gotten me in trouble at time, but also has been hugely rewarding. The best way for one to tap in to this is to believe in themselves whole heartedly, regardless of what others are saying around you. Now like I mentioned, sometimes this can get you in trouble, but what doesn’t kill you truly makes you stronger and no matter the outcome, you always take away a lesson.
Open Mindedness- This is a skill I am continuing to hone as I get older, This helps me in collaborating, which is becoming more and more predominant on my road to superstardom. While I can excel in being independent and headstrong, it forces me to remain open to new ideas and thought processes I wouldn’t have come across on my own.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Being a person who wears many hats, I am no stranger to being overwhelmed! When that happens, I fall into a funk and kind of sit and stay there for a few days or weeks. I know, haha not the best way to deal with it, but I am a work in progress! I’m exploring better ways to deal with being overwhelmed, but as of now I just sit with the depression, self-loathing, laundry piles, dish piles, and messy living area, until the sun starts to come back out again and I regain motivation for cleaning and being productive. This usually doesn’t come until my schedule clears a bit, which is pretty rare these days. I recommend trying to stay on top of things, but understand how incredibly hard that is in this busy crazy world we live in. I’ll let y’all know when I figure out a real solution! 🙂
