Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Zhiwen (Esther) Tang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Zhiwen (Esther), thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Curiosity about nature has always been the wellspring of my creativity. I have an enduring love for various animals and plants. During my leisure time, I frequently visit places such as botanical gardens, zoos, and aquariums. Additionally, I indulge in hiking to establish an intimate connection with life. Many of my works, including ‘Joy of Birth,’ draw inspiration from the vibrant life force I encounter while hiking.
I also find inspiration through reading, particularly in the realm of science fiction novels. I’m often captivated by subjects like constellations, the universe, and meteor showers. The imaginative visions of authors, whether they are about the future or the past, consistently fuel my creative spirit. Works such as Haruki Murakami’s ‘1Q84’ and Kazuo Ishiguro’s ‘Never Let Me Go’ have provided me with abundant strength and inspiration. I relish the opportunity to perceive the world from diverse perspectives through these authors and then convey my understanding through my artwork.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My artistic journey commenced at an early age when I discovered my passion for drawing cartoons and illustrations during primary school. As I honed my skills, drawing gradually became the central focus of my life, ultimately shaping my identity as an artist. My illustration style is deeply influenced by my surroundings. The transition from Shenzhen to New York City ignited my fascination with the dynamic interplay between modern urban life and nature. As a Gen Z illustrator, I see art as a powerful means to spread positivity. My creative purpose extends beyond personal enjoyment; it’s about sharing happiness and warmth through my work. Each piece I create is inspired by my own experiences and emotions. I’m particularly drawn to crafting artworks that explore the wonders of nature, urban existence, and mental well-being in our fast-paced society. In my view, illustration is rooted in the people and society that surround us. I maintain a keen observation of our world and continually seek new ideas and skills.
Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with Ellemen, StarChef, and various studios and publishers. Some of my work has been featured in prestigious platforms such as Communication Arts, World Illustration Award, and the Society of Illustrators. Recently, my illustrations ‘Lunar Dinosaur Fantasy Award’ and ‘Lifestyle Illustration’ earned recognition in the iJungle Illustration Awards.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my perspective, there are three fundamental aspects that are most crucial in illustration design: observation, sustained technical proficiency, and storytelling. Firstly, I firmly believe that art creation originates from life itself. A significant portion of my work is derived from observations in my daily life. This includes keenly observing the colors of nature, empathizing with the emotions of people around me, and maintaining sensitivity to the environment. These observations are invaluable sources of inspiration for my creative process. Secondly, the importance of continuous practice cannot be overstated. Inspiration often strikes during consistent, rapid sketches, record-keeping, and sketchbook exercises. It is through this ongoing training that a personal style gradually takes shape. Lastly, storytelling is the cornerstone of illustration, particularly in conveying information or narratives. Whether it’s in children’s books, graphic novels, or commercial endeavors, illustrations serve as powerful tools for communicating information, emotions, and perspectives. Storytelling is pivotal in the world of illustration as it transforms images into vehicles for conveying information, expressing emotions, and engaging with the audience. It adds depth, context, and significance to visual elements, enhancing the effectiveness of illustrations in conveying messages and connecting with the audience.
I believe that for emerging illustrators, maintaining an exploratory spirit and consistently challenging oneself is paramount. The demands of work can sometimes diminish one’s passion, but embracing new challenges and pushing the boundaries of one’s abilities is crucial for preserving love and freshness for the craft. Furthermore, seeking interaction with seasoned professionals in the field, asking questions, and continuously learning are invaluable steps in the journey of growth and development in the world of illustration. These are some of the valuable pieces of advice I offer to those starting their careers in this field.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I find myself overwhelmed or stressed, I have a few go-to methods for regaining balance. One of my favorite ways to unwind is to step away from my current tasks and seek inspiration at art exhibitions. Observing various artists’ styles helps me break free from my usual creative routines and sparks fresh ideas. Another rejuvenating activity I enjoy is connecting with nature. Going for a hike, immersing myself in the crisp mountain air, and allowing my mind to relax amidst the natural beauty is incredibly therapeutic. When I’m faced with a daunting workload, I find solace in creating a comprehensive to-do list. This approach allows me to tackle tasks one step at a time, providing a sense of progress without feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of work. In essence, I don’t subscribe to the notion of tirelessly grinding away at work. Instead, I take a step back when faced with a creative block or high workload, as this often leads to the emergence of fresh ideas and renewed productivity.
