Meet Zhuoqian Yu

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Zhuoqian Yu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Zhuoqian below.

Zhuoqian, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Sometimes what the nay-sayers say does affect my mood. But I kept telling myself that there was nothing to be afraid of. Life is a running race, when you run forward, there will always be a lot of obstacles around. Instead of getting lost in nay-sayer’s words, improve yourself. I believe when you get better, the environment is also gradually better.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a production designer, I often imagine countless crazy scene designs in my mind. For me, I enjoy drawing and designing. The most exciting thing is to explore the style of the script, design and build the shooting scenes. When you’re on set and you see your design work on camera, it’s very exciting.

I like to discover the stories behind life. When I stumbled across the eating disorder community, I joined a number of volunteer organizations about eating disorders. I was inspired to shoot my first work, body. It’s a story told from a woman’s point of view – eating disorders. I hope that through the constant exploration of the complex experiences of the main characters, the director’s story will bring authenticity and deep resonance to people. I also hope that my works can make people who have had similar experiences feel warmth and strength. This short film received several festival nominations, which made me more determined to continue on the road of film. Life is full of possibilities.

My second short film is coming soon, please look forward to it with me.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me, it’s love first, and then constant learning knowledge. To anyone new to the film journey, I would say, keep your love and determination to succeed. Continue to look for opportunities to enter the crew to learn, practical experience coupled with learning, will let you go faster and faster on this road.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Before I say anything, I need to thank my parents. Before I became filmmaker, I was a photographer and I had my own studio. But I left everything behind, gave up my job, left the country, and started from scratch, dreaming of becoming a filmmaker. It is my parents who have been giving me encouragement and support, giving me financial help, so that I have no regrets on the road to pursue my dream. I am very grateful to them.
