Meet Zimuzo Okala

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zimuzo Okala a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Zimuzo, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?

I have to admit it can be difficult at times but when I do the math I find that in order for them to have something to comment on I found enough joy and motivation to put it out and all they did with their time was be negative and that’s easy. “Anybody could do that” ok but you didn’t! “You have so much time on your hands” maybe? But isn’t that a blessing? “I have a real job” and it sounds like you hate it maybe you should try something you like as much as I like my job! Lol I know there’s a personal fulfillment in what I did that nobody can take from me. And for every one negative person there’s droves of people that got something positive from my work but ultimately as long as one of those people is me, I’m good! Plus feedback positive or negative can always be used as inspiration!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m Zimuzo Okala, a multihyphenate creative and nail artist, focusing on hand led storytelling through intricate and out of the box nail art. My journey started with a passion for self-expression and grew into a full-blown career centered on creating unique designs that turn nails into miniature canvases. Whether I’m working on a special project for a client or creating nails for a fashion show, I’m inspired by the power of hands to communicate emotions, convey character, and even set a mood. I love the technicalities and precision required in every step of the process, and that has inspired me to pursue concept development and strategy, and even creative thinking in tech.

Looking forward, I’m excited to explore these new mediums and collaborate in projects that extend my artistic reach beyond nails—aiming to bridge beauty with impact.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Always remaining open to learning from everyone and everywhere, drawing strength from my faith and personal growth and having bad days is ok. When it comes to advice, I believe that the most important lesson is to truly understand yourself so you can trust your instincts. I don’t usually give advice because every situation is unique and needs the insights of those involved. However, if I had to summarize, learning to trust yourself will help you navigate through any challenge.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

I lay down. It sound simple and maybe even obvious but I don’t believe in the push through everything grind culture. Sometimes you need breaks and you absolutely should take them!
