We were lucky to catch up with Zizelda Moreira recently and have shared our conversation below.
Zizelda, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Being an artist, I am always working with my creativity. Creativity is part of my being. I have always been very observant because I love life. I believe that nature and I understand each other intimately. My relationship with it has played a big role in my life, from the darkest to the brightest moments. In a way, nature has been one of my biggest inspirations and creative partners in my life.
I am also always looking to better things around me, to make them more beautiful and comfortable for me. I believe that artists, no matter what art they practice, are restless by nature. They are always looking to create new things, think of new concepts, and always look for new perspectives in life. And I am no exception to that.
I use all my senses when I paint. I take in what I see, what I smell, and what I feel, and I use it to create new lines, colors, and shapes. My intuition is also a big part of my process. It guides my mind to new places.
To keep my creativity alive, I rely on the fact that it’s not me who sustains it, but rather, it’s my creativity that keeps me alive.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I specialize in creating abstract art, which is a style that allows me to truly express the essence of who I am. I look to express my emotions through colors, lines, textures, and movements. The results might not make sense to some, but that is the price paid for the limitless possibilities abstract art provides.
Each one of my paintings is a way of seeing the world. I feel enormous happiness and satisfaction when I am painting, for there exists in every trace and movement a sound, a song that only I can hear. My art is for anyone who believes in the transformation of the human being, the evolution of the human mind. I wish to reflect deepness and extreme intensity through the world of color.
I post my works on my website as well as my Instagram. You can find me at @zimoreira_art or zimoreira.com. I am working on posting new paintings to my artist shop on Instagram and on my website.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Since I was a child I loved drawing. But even though it had always been a part of my life, it was something I did only for fun, I had never thought that I should get technically better at it. It was not until later in my life, when I began oil painting, that saw how essential drawing skills would be. Oil painting ignited a passion within me and so I sought to better my drawing skills so that I could paint better.
After improving my drawing skills, I took a watercolor class. This taught me color theory. This was my way of learning about colors, how to use them, and when to use certain colors. It was another fundamental skill that I gained on my way to becoming the artist that I am today.
After a few years of painting, I began taking workshops from artists whose art I loved. I went to museums, classes, teachers; and through the years I exposed myself to many different styles, approaches, and techniques. I started to mature as an artist and develop my own unique style which I would become to my abstract art.
My advice to beginners is to first know what you love, then do it every day. Practice, even if only for twenty minutes a day. You build your skills little by little. Also, take as many courses as you can. Comparison only serves to direct you into your own unique path, but never get discouraged by someone who you think might be a better artist because we all have our own unique voice.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I made great strides in bettering my mental health in the past year. Covid was a time of sorrow for me. I felt isolated from the world, from nature, and I also lost a few family members. This was compounded by the harsh Michigan winter. So I sought to move away, somewhere warm and sunny. I had always thought of one day moving to Florida, so after a few months of house hunting, we found a place to call home.
After moving, the biggest improvement was in how inspired I felt. Nature is my biggest source of inspiration, and here in Florida, I am surrounded by an abundance of it. Many of the plants and trees here remind me of Brazil, which connects me with why I first began creating art.
When we are happy, that happiness is transmuted into the art. I see this reflected in how people react to my art as well. Many strangers who have never been exposed to my art before find me on Instagram tell me how much they love my paintings and ask questions about how I developed my style. Moving to a place where I would be surrounded by inspiration changed my art for the better and put me on a new path of learning and creativity.
