Meet Zochu Liu

We were lucky to catch up with Zochu Liu recently and have shared our conversation below.

Zochu, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

Certainly! Here’s a response you could use:

In my role as a game audio sound designer, being the only one in the room who looks like me has been an opportunity for growth and learning. I’ve learned to be effective and successful by focusing on my strengths and unique perspective. My classical music background provides a distinct edge in creating rich, immersive soundscapes that enhance the gaming experience. I’ve also made it a priority to actively listen, collaborate, and communicate effectively with my teammates to ensure that my contributions are both valued and understood. Embracing continuous learning and seeking feedback has been crucial in refining my skills and staying adaptable in a dynamic industry. By focusing on my passion for game audio and leveraging my unique background, I’ve been able to make a meaningful impact and contribute positively to the team.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

As a game sound designer, my role involves creating and integrating soundscapes that enhance the emotional and immersive experience of video games. This can include everything from crafting dynamic sound effects and atmospheric elements to designing unique audio cues that respond to player actions and game events.

What excites me most about this field is the opportunity to blend my passion for music with interactive media. The process of translating a game’s narrative and atmosphere into a rich auditory experience is incredibly fulfilling. I love how sound design can influence the player’s emotions and immersion, making each game world come alive in unique ways.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Adaptability: The game audio industry is fast-evolving, with new technologies and techniques emerging regularly. Being adaptable has allowed me to stay current and innovate in my work. For those early in their journey, I recommend staying curious and open to learning new tools and methodologies. Engage with industry trends and be willing to experiment with different approaches.
Collaboration: Effective communication and collaboration with other team members are crucial. In game development, working closely with designers, programmers, and other creatives ensures that audio seamlessly integrates with the game. For newcomers, building strong interpersonal skills and being a proactive team player will help in creating cohesive and impactful audio experiences.
Attention to Detail: The nuances in sound design can make a significant difference in the overall quality of a game. Developing a keen ear for detail and a commitment to refining every element of the audio is essential. To improve in this area, practice by analyzing and critiquing sound design in various games, and seek feedback on your own work to continuously hone your skills.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was supporting my decision to attend a music-focused high school when I was 14. This early immersion in a specialized environment allowed me to develop my skills and passion for music, setting the foundation for my skill sets and artistic taste. Their encouragement and belief in my potential were crucial in helping me pursue my dreams and ultimately led me to this fulfilling path in sound.
