We recently connected with Zoë Cosentino and have shared our conversation below.
Zoë, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Honestly being kind to myself was the biggest help in developing my confidence. The kinder I am to myself through doing things like looking in the mirror and saying I look good, self care routines, taking time to myself during the day, etc, the more confident I feel in everyday life and in my career. I think it sounds silly but speaking nice things to yourself has an awesome outcome. If I’m anxious before I go on stage I just think “you got this you know what you’re doing” and after a while of doing this in all aspects of my life I really started to believe it. I have a pretty positive outlook on life too I like to remind myself that everything will always work itself out in the end.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Zoë Coz and I’m a Denver singer/songwriter and performer originally from Connecticut. I moved out to Denver in 2022 to finish up my last two years of college and get involved in a greater community of networking and local musicians. I began learning guitar and writing songs around the age of 10 and I always knew I wanted to pursue music but I didn’t really figure out my style until I got out to Colorado. I grew up with parents who were constantly playing music and talking about it and I think that’s had a big influence on myself as a person and a musician. Artists like Adrianne Lenker, Death Cab for Cutie, Jeff Buckley, and Fiona Apple inspire me everyday in my writing, my style and my push to keep getting better. You can never be done learning in this career. I recently put out my first single under Zoë Coz and I’m currently working on two more and an EP projected to be ready in the summer!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think the first thing that really helped me was listening to successful musicians that I look up to and emulating their styles. Also just listening to all genres, paying attention to arrangements and lyrics and anything new or interesting that I could grasp onto and take inspiration from. Another thing is having an open mind and always willing to learn new skills and techniques whether its scales and theory, new songwriting techniques or new ways of viewing the world around you career wise and personally. Finally, being confident in yourself.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I think the best advice I have for anyone is to allow yourself to truly rest. I had a therapist who taught me that when you’re sitting down, watching tv, reading a book, just taking a break, but the whole time you’re thinking “I’m being so lazy, I need to be productive, I can’t believe I’m just sitting here doing nothing”, so on and so forth, you’re never truly resting and it actually makes you more tired and more overwhelmed. You deserve a break and some time to yourself to just do something fun or do nothing at all. It’s so important for your mental health and to help balance everything in your life out.
