We recently connected with Zoe Jean Fowler and have shared our conversation below.
Zoe, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Many songwriters live by this motto, but most of the time when I feel burnt out creatively, I just need to go live a little. There is so much inspiration in a fun night out, in a trip out of town, in friend’s stories, in people watching, even in listening to a great album, but sometimes stepping away from writing can feel like a step backward. I try to remind myself that I can only write what I know and what’s true to me, so if I’m not finding inspiration from my life, I gotta go live some more!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Zoe Jean Fowler, a singer-songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee. I write and release music in the Pop-Country space, filling my time with making either my own or others’ songs come to life. One special part about being a songwriter is the element of vulnerability that enters a room when trust is established between writers. It is such an honor to be a part of other people’s stories and how they choose to creatively share themselves with the world.
Since my debut album, We All Change, is climbing toward 300,000 streams, it’s time to release some new music! In 2024, I have 8 singles coming for my listeners that are filled with stories I’ve been waiting to tell.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most important qualities for creatives can be seemingly paradoxical. First, creatives need self awareness. I learned this quickly when I started entering writing rooms that were way above my pay grade. It is so valuable when a creative knows when to chime in, when to listen, and when to just sit back and learn.
Even though it might seem like the opposite end of the spectrum, creatives need to be risk-takers. There is a level of faith and forward movement that can turn a gift into a career. My only advice would be to find the balance of when to pull back and when to absolutely go for it.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
The one thing that will make me overwhelmed faster than anything else is comparison. When I compare my progress to other artists and creatives, I immediately lose all my joy. My advice for those who may struggle with the same thing is to ask people’s stories more. Often, people we think have catapulted ahead have years behind the scenes in prep for where they are now. The faster I learn to only compare myself to my own personal growth, the more I can enjoy the ride!
