Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Zoe McDaniel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Zoe , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome has been a significant challenge, especially since starting my career in event and wedding planning. I believe it’s what held me back from starting earlier. Being human, there’s always going to be that voice in the back of your head saying, “You’re not good enough, it could have been better, you don’t deserve this.” We find many ways to sabotage ourselves from achieving the greatness we deserve, and imposter syndrome is certainly one of them. Unfortunately, more often than not, imposter syndrome wins and holds so many people back from reaching their highest potential.
Another major trigger for my imposter syndrome is comparing myself to others in similar fields who are monumentally more successful and have been at it for years. But once again, great things take time. The key is to just keep going, trust the process, and focus on your own journey rather than measuring yourself against others who are at different stages in their careers.
The way I’ve overcome this-although it’s a never-ending battle-is by constantly reminding myself of how far I’ve come and remembering that it takes time to create something great. I remind myself that I put in the hard work every day and deserve every ounce of success or recognition I receive.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Here at Zuzu Collective, we escape the mundane by adding soul and character to each event and wedding. So many events and weddings nowadays follow a cut and dry outline of exactly how to plan, how to decorate, etc.-which is necessary while planning anything-but it seems we’ve forgotten that we can add details of ourselves and elements that guests will truly appreciate. These personal touches ignite curiosity, creativity, and excitement in them.
With each event we plan, it’s not just an event-it’s an experience that leaves you thinking long after it’s over. What makes this so special is the endless possibilities for events and weddings. For example, with weddings, I think a lot of people forget that this day is supposed to represent YOU. So whatever that may be—it could be a wedding that feels like it’s straight out of a fictional universe, or it could incorporate multiple different elements that make people look around and say, “Oh my gosh, that is so [bride or groom’s name]!”
Either way, we’re creating events that go beyond tradition and breathe life into every aspect. At Zuzu Collective, we believe your celebration should be as unique as your story, and we’re here to help bring that vision to life in ways that surprise and delight both you and your guests.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Yes, first: fear. Not having it, but letting go of it. I found before starting my journey that the only thing holding me back was fear-fear of it not working out, fear of people judging me, the list goes on and on. I knew I had to confront these fears to move forward, so I gave myself answers to every fear I had. For example, “What if it doesn’t work out?” I would tell myself, “That’s not an option. I will keep going until I’m successful, no matter what.” “What if people judge me?” “People are so enveloped in their own lives that I doubt they’ll have time to judge my business. And if they do, I bet it’s for a few seconds and then they move on. No harm done.
Second: passion. I think doing something you’re genuinely passionate about is so important. You can start a business out of anything, but if you’re not passionate about it, it could take longer to build and you may find yourself hitting mental blocks because you’re simply not excited. When I started my business, I knew I was passionate about themed events, organization, and bringing people together to feel welcomed and seen. That alone has driven me to where I’m at today and continues to excite me.
Lastly: developing thick skin. No matter what industry you’re in, you’re going to face rejection all the time. I’ve come to realize it’s just the name of the game and it’s not personal. Once you get used to that, your wins will feel so much better.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking for event collaborations! Whether it’s for a styled shoot or an actual production, I’m always open to getting creative and creating something beautiful together.
I’m particularly interested in collaborating with photographers, florists, venues, caterers, musicians, and other creative vendors who share a passion for unique, soul filled events that go beyond the ordinary. I love working with people who aren’t afraid to think outside the box and bring fresh perspectives to the table. If you’re someone who values creativity, attention to detail, and creating memorable experiences, I’d love to hear from you.
I’m also open to collaborating with other event planners on larger projects, styled shoots, or educational content that can benefit our industry as a whole.
The best way to contact me is through my email: [email protected]. Don’t hesitate to reach out with your ideas-I’d love to explore how we can create something amazing together!
