We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Zoe Ny. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Zoe below.
Zoe , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
My most impactful work has been when I’ve surrendered my fear and given myself the permission to be outrageous. Having a sense of child-like imagination and excitement makes me a better songwriter. My creativity thrives when I am present enough to experience all of my senses. When I feel stuck, I love going out to see other performers and mediums of art to get inspired. It always reminds me of my own passion.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been working on writing and recording Americana music for a few years now. I play a lot locally in Nashville, many of the songs I sing are unreleased. I am finally putting out my first single from this batch of music in the summer. I couldn’t be more excited to share it.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Dedication, courage, and gratitude. Growing up, I always knew I had a gift. My teachers were quick to remind me that drive and hard work always beats natural talent. I have a competitive spirit and never stop trying to beat my personal best. Growing up, my mom taught me the power of gratitude. In my career as an artist, I make sure to express my appreciation for those who support and empower me. Practicing active gratefulness means giving back and serving those around you. Blessing others with what you’ve been blessed with is the ultimate success. Courage is hard work. It takes fearlessness to accept critique with grace. Becoming friends with failure is a form of self-compassion. Plant yourself in a big pot and you will experience growing pains.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I owe my life as it looks like today to my late vocal coach Jennifer Kincer. She mentored me for almost a decade. Her expectation for excellence lifted me up and allowed me to pursue my craft professionally. She constantly pushed me out of my comfort zone and prepared me for an industry that is harsh and competitive. I watched her make her way around any room with elegance and confidence. She handled every challenge with grace. Though she is not with us anymore, I show my love for her every day by pursuing my passion. I teach around 30 students to continue her legacy, I hope to see her work live on through others.
