Meet Zuzanna Gerulewicz

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zuzanna Gerulewicz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Zuzanna, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

Creativity is like a battery, it has to be charged form time to time, otherwise it will run out.
It is a very individual matter how one sustains one’s creative spirit, and what I found works best for me is traveling, not for work kind of traveling, but for myself.
This is one of the things I love the most, changing the scenario, discovering new places, cultures, seeing different architecture, trying new flavors, meeting amazing people and many more. Opening up to a new place inspires me, recharges my creative batteries and broadens my horizons.
In the moments when I’m not able to be away exploring the world, I have few small domestic solutions that can inspire me like a good movie, photography album or a little seance on the social media app, which can be an amazing tool for finding inspiration if you use it wisely.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As a wedding photographer, I focus on documenting my clients’ most important and personal moments of my clients around the world and transforming their memories into an artistic work that they will cherish for years to come.

What excites me most about my job are two parts:
1. Aspect of collaboration: my clients’ story + my style, combined into something beautiful. They’re my muses, I’m their artist, and I feel extremely honored that they appreciated my art so much that they entrusted me with their wedding photos. We all put a lot of work into a wedding event and I love seeing the fruits of this collective effort.

2. Diversity – no wedding is the same: people, location, style, season etc. Each event is different, and each time I feel like I’m entering a unique world that I get to document. The mix of styles, shapes and sizes of the events I get to experience is incredibly rewarding and motivates me to improve my skills as a photographer, grow as an artist, redefining my approach each time. I always ask myself : how can I best serve my clients? Is there any new skill I can learn to make it better? How can I tell their story truthfully, in my own style and give them the best possible experience?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, I think being authentic, mastering your craft and learning to connect with people, are skills and traits that will always have a big impact on your journey. The sooner you start working on them, the better you will become.

As a photographer you need to know your equipment and have technical skills, as an artist you want to follow your aesthetic and develop your own style (because this is essentially why your future clients will hire you), and as a person, you want to maintain great relationships with your clients and other vendors and this requires being respectful, open minded, kind, considerate, helpful and many more.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?

I believe that the most ideal client for me is someone who is open minded, appreciative of the arts and someone who follows their own vision.
Throughout my career, I have photographed many different events around the world – from European villas, Hollywood mansions, SF Chinatown, wineries, country weddings all the way to the beaches of Mexico. And they were all beautiful. I learned that it’s not just about the style of the wedding or my photography, but about the approach and authenticity. The real magic happens when clients follow their own vision and needs and trust me to document it. This is ultimately what I want to photograph – real people having the time of their lives, however they choose.
