Melissa Randall on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Melissa Randall and have shared our conversation below.

Melissa, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something outside of work that is bringing me joy lately is dancing! I have been going to somatic and ecstatic dance classes and events all over Los Angeles, and I am finding myself more and more embodied as I move through the freedom of dance. The kind of dancing I am drawn to right now does not have any “steps” to follow. It encourages full-body movement and expression. When I go, I feel like I tap into deeper parts of myself. It almost feels like a moving meditation for my soul.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
First, I should say I had a very vivid imagination as a kid and I invented so many little stories. I would create characters and direct anyone who would play along in my mini acting scenes. One of my earliest memories of feeling powerful came from that instinct to perform and persuade. After watching the movie Pete’s Dragon on TV, I decided I was Pete. The next day at school I told everyone about my adventures and swore I was Pete from the movie. For a little while, all the other kids believed me. It only fell apart later at the park when a kid asked my grandma if my story was true. But for that short time, I convinced everyone that it was just a wig and makeup and that I was, in fact, Pete. Ohhhh the adventures we had!

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Awww, Sweet Melissa, all the things that make you feel strange or set apart are the very treasures that will one day light your path. The quirks, the colors, the ways you do not blend in are your jewels. What feels like too much or not enough right now is really the magic that makes you unforgettable. Hold on to your wonder. It is your gift

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely! The way I show up in the world is the same way I run my business: bright, colorful, full of kindness, compassion, organization, and a whole lot of joy. I am true to my word, I do what I say, I show up early, and I am reliable. I am also an attentive listener, a clear communicator, and a loyal friend. Do I walk around every day in a hot pink apron and full baking outfit? Not exactly. But the joy, kindness, and authenticity you see when I am teaching are the same qualities I carry in my everyday life.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Well, let me just say this… I once heard a quote by Richard Simmons that has stayed with me: “If you believe in YOU, all of your dreams will come true.” Those words became a little anchor for me in the early days. While I was creating my business and waiting for that very first client, I kept coming back to them. I didn’t have any proof yet that it would all work out, but holding onto that reminder helped me keep going until the doors started to open.
