Mercy Madu of Atlanta on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Mercy Madu and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Mercy, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Right now, I would say I’m wandering on a path. I’m at a slow yet steady pace that allows my mind to drift for a bit. I have no clear direction except for what’s in front of me and I intend on not looking back. With that, I am on this path just to see where it takes me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mercy Madu…and I’m an artist. I’ve graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 3D Animation and a Master’s degree in that same field. I’ve learned and still continue to learn all that there is when it comes to character animation and acting. I also dabble into character designs just for fun. As a storyteller, I’m always developing stories to tell and visuals to execute. I’m in the process of developing a 2D animated series with a couple of talented artists that I used to go to school with and/or connected with, What makes this particular project so special is that I have so many people that believe in it just as much as I do and they still believe in it even when I was going through some difficult times. I’m so grateful just to even know so many amazing creatives that were willing to bring my vision to life no matter how small the task may seem or how slow the process may be. These collaborations are not a super professional work environment with a massive budget, far from it. But it allows talented to grow and to showcase their skills and that’s what’s really important to me while I’m going through this journey.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a little girl trying to figure herself out, trying to figure life out. I was a loner, an outcast to say the least. My mind was filled with many thoughts but no words would come to existence. I was an imaginative kid that could make the world a better place through art, through visual storytelling. I always saw myself to listen and you will just know. I was only a mere girl who knew nothing but nothing itself.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The defining wounds would have to be enduring the emotional trauma within my family. I think when my dad got sick, it was a struggle to understand as a child and to still be a child after that. And with some animosity that would spread around me, all I could do was stay in my bubble, my happy place. And when my father died, all I could do was shield myself from the world, never understanding but always still standing. The healing begins in due time but it’s only a battle that will need to end at some point.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
What resonates with me but I rarely articulate is peace comes differently for others. What may work for you, may not work for another person, and vice versa. But protecting your peace is the most important thing in life that that’s the only thing that could lift you and keep you moving. We have to understand that life is meant to be lived the way that it was meant to be and we all are on our own different journeys to find said peace.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I will give my all if it means I’m doing it with passion. No one has to praise me for it if it’s something that means a lot to me. I don’t believe we need validation or compliments to do what we need to do. It is nice just to feel appreciated but it has to begin just by you feeling that spark, praise or not.
