Mikara of Sacramento on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mikara. Check out our conversation below.

Mikara, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Oooh definitely songwriting. There’s something magical about it. Sometimes it’s hard for me to express how I feel but I can always make sense of it once I sit down and write a song. It’s like taking a snapshot of me in that moment that I get to keep forever.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Mikara and I make electro pop songs for delulu lovergirls. My songs are kind of like little love letters to all the daydreamers out there who love hard, maybe get their heart broken, and still keep believing in love anyway.

Outside of the music, I’m also building a world where self-love, confidence, and healing are part of the conversation. I’ve been leaning into connecting with women online about everything from manifestation to raising your standards, and it’s been so special to see that community grow.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
From a young age, I loved music and fashion and was never scared to be bold. I wore bright color skirts over flare jeans with rhinestone ties and striped hand warmers. I painted my bedroom walls hot pink and my bathroom lime green. My parents let me have a lot of freedom, I look back and wonder why they let me do that. The colors are awful haha. I remember my Freshman year wearing white furry knee high boots to school every day and getting made fun of. I toned down my look a bit after that but when Senior year came around and we were touring college campuses, I saw the coolest girls with the most unique style at San Francisco State University and that’s the school I ended up choosing to go to and where I found my voice to write my first EP.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
The first time I really got vulnerable in my music and songwriting was in 2016 with the release of my first EP “Coast to Coast.” There’s something so powerful about creating art from pain. As artist’s we truly are alchemists in that way. In 2020 I finally got vulnerable and opened up about my abusive relationship – something I never pictured myself talking about publicly or writing music about. I released “Don’t Know How To Love” in 2023. With my next release coming out October 10th, I’m singing about possibly the most painful thing I’ve dealt with yet – the death of a loved one. I’ve been sitting on this song for a couple years now and I’ve finally decided it’s time to share it with the world.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
That’s easy. Frienship, Family and Love. Because without love you can’t have friendship or family. Self-love is just as important too because we need to be our own best friend. I try to spread love every day I can because you never know who needs it.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Oh definitely! Even just today I submitted my new song “wrote a song for you but you’ll never hear it” for release and I was so excited and ready to celebrate haha. I always look forward to getting in the studio with my friends. There’s so much creative energy and it’s so fun to hear everyone’s ideas and how they contribute to the album I’m currently working on. It’s a lot of long nights and long drives of me heading back and forth to LA from Norcal but it’s worth it – the music makes me feel alive.
