Monica , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Diría que integridad y energía. La inteligencia suele sobrevalorarse, mientras que la profundidad de pensamiento y la capacidad de irradiar energía positiva crean conexiones mucho más significativas. Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Siempre que me hacen esta pregunta, tiendo a dejarme llevar por las historias. Lo que puedo decir de inmediato es que soy una mujer con una caja mágica. En esa caja, llevo miles de historias. Y ya que hablamos de magia, diría que mi superpoder es poder ver lo que otros podrían pasar por alto: lo que tú ves desde fuera, yo podría percibirlo desde dentro. Mi lema personal es: ¡Cada día hay una foto! Y esa simple frase revela quién soy: fotógrafa.
Mi historia comenzó cuando era niña, jugando en el parque con mi hermana y una cámara regalada. Solo tenía doce años y tomaba foto tras foto, completamente inmersa en la emoción. Al final del día, mi hermana me preguntó: “¿Cuántas fotos tomaste? ¿De qué tamaño era el rollo de película?”. Ese fue el momento en que aprendí que las cámaras tenían un límite. Pero también fue el día en que me di cuenta de que quería ser fotógrafa.
A los catorce años, también descubrí el mundo del espectáculo, trabajando en teatro durante varios años. Me enamoré de la escritura y comencé a colaborar en mi periódico local. Más tarde, mientras terminaba mi carrera técnica en informática, finalmente me matriculé en un curso de fotografía. Fue entonces cuando mi mundo se concretó: mi primera cámara, mis primeros rollos de película, mis primeras fotografías y el primer paso hacia una carrera para toda la vida.
A través de Zenit, Nikon y Canon, abracé la fotografía como algo más que una profesión: se convirtió en mi forma de ver el mundo, capturándolo a través de mi caja mágica.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
He tenido varios momentos que han moldeado mi forma de ver el mundo. Mi vida es un cambio constante de perspectivas, lo cual encuentro saludable porque me permite fluir con el crecimiento del mundo. Todavía recuerdo cuando revelé mis primeras fotografías: lo que vi fue en realidad un camino hacia la comprensión de mi ser interior, casi como una terapia fotográfica. Podía sentir la luz y la sombra dialogando en cada imagen, y me di cuenta de que siempre están destinadas a coexistir. Para mí, esa se convirtió en la filosofía de la fotografía.
Mi profesor solía decirme: “Hay una búsqueda”. Quizás a esa temprana edad, esa búsqueda se trataba de encontrarme a mí misma, ya que siempre fui una niña tranquila con un rico mundo interior. Más tarde, cuando empecé a comprender el aspecto técnico del funcionamiento de una cámara, aprendí que una herramienta solo tiene sentido si se maneja con precisión. De lo contrario, solo se pulsa un botón en automático. Esa comprensión marcó mi forma de ver el mundo.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Monica, your name means unique. Think of yourself, and buy that house you long for. You are working so hard to fulfill dreams that are not truly yours; build your own home. And then, as a final piece of advice, go out and see the world — because you will travel a lot, but it’s important not to feel that something is missing. That emptiness you sometimes feel might simply be called your own home.

Dear Monica, you are unique; your body is unique. Take care of it as the temple of steel that it is.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
From my point of view, one of the biggest lies in this career is that technique is everything — that you need a certain brand, a specific lens, or the most expensive editing software to create amazing images. And the truth is, you don’t.
If you’re starting in this beautiful career, first imagine the shot in your mind, tell a story before thinking about numbers and framing. Art isn’t measured by how much you invest in equipment, but by what you carry inside and what you want to express.
You don’t ‘take’ a photo, you make a photo: you compose it, feel it, and transform it. Photography is even considered a form of therapy, which shows that the soul of this industry is far more important than a million-dollar camera.
Your best photo won’t be made by a brand or a magnificent lens — you make it with your imagination, your vision, and your truth. Don’t buy into the lie that material things define your art; what truly makes it unique is what comes from within you and the story you choose to tell.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Yes, definitely —and you realize it as the years go by. Even when difficult times come, you keep doing what you love for a long time. When something is not truly for you, it fades away with time and becomes just a sweet illusion. But when you do what you were born to do, you are in tune with your written destiny, if you want to put it that way.
In my youth, people would sometimes ask me why I didn’t dedicate myself to something else, especially during lean times when things weren’t going so well. And yes, you can do many other things to fill the gaps and learn different skills, but you never abandon your passion, because it is your essence.
If one day I sell cakes, I will always be a photographer who sells cakes. I don’t stop being who I am. And to you, who are reading me: never abandon your essence either. We were all born for something. Find it, embrace it, and keep it forever.
