We’re looking forward to introducing you to Moustapha Berjaoui. Check out our conversation below.
Moustapha, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My mornings run on a strict system: coffee first, then I play gardener with the plants, personal chef to the cats, referee of my inbox, reluctant athlete at home, and finally… breakfast. In that sacred order. Always.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Egyptian-Lebanese and the founder of Illusionary. Basically, I get to travel the world making the impossible look easy, whether I’m performing, creating illusions, or consulting for magicians and TV. What makes Illusionary special is that it’s not just about tricks, it’s about moments that stick with people long after the curtain drops. Many of the top magicians in the industry use my creations, which is something I take pride in. I like to mix creativity with a bit of mischief, pushing magic into places people don’t expect. Right now, I’m working on projects that reimagine how magic can surprise and connect with modern audiences, and having a lot of fun doing it.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Honestly, most of what I’ve learned has come from experience, trial and error, and plenty of feedback along the way. Looking up to other creators has also inspired and shaped my path. And even now, I’m still learning and constantly refining myself—it’s an ongoing process that keeps the work exciting.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
I used to be obsessed with building clout and chasing that influencer status on Instagram. Then the pandemic hit and I realized I didn’t actually care about likes or fame as much as I thought. So I flipped the script: instead of being in front of the camera trying to impress, I’m now much happier behind the camera creating wonders for others. Turns out, creating magic is way more fun than chasing algorithms.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Honestly, every project I create gets my full commitment. Some take months, others take years before I feel they’re ready to be released. I work hard to refine everything before it goes public, and even after release I keep improving it based on customer feedback. For me, it’s never about rushing something out. It’s about making sure each creation has the time it needs to truly evolve.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
Take away the name, role, and possessions and you’d still find me with coffee in hand, cats plotting my downfall, a jungle of plants hanging on for dear life, and a few angry customers chasing me for updates. Add in my eternal talent for breaking things right after I fix them, a couple of half-finished tricks waiting to become miracles, and me still figuring it all out one mistake at a time. That’s what would remain
