We recently connected with Aaron St. Louis and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Aaron, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
My most effective and, thankfully, easiest method for overcoming a creative block is simply enjoying someone else’s art, especially art that is outside of my own method/style/approach. Being able to find inspiration any and everywhere is what keeps my writing robust and exciting for myself. Experiencing, consuming, & digesting art from sculptures, to paintings, to instrumentals, to simply conversations with peers, newcomers and predecessors feels like I am entering new worlds of creativity, where I get the chance to be the wanderer, rather than the orchestrator. This gives me the building blocks to eventually, earnestly and confidently, orchestrate wonder again.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner and founder of AJoeSaint Artistry LLC, If I had to sum up who I am in one word, I’d simply call myself a communicator. One who expounds on thoughts and emotions, commonly through poetry and song, but also through conversation, clothing, and curation. Performing spoken word is my first love. The manipulating and bending of language to cultivate thought and emotion excites me because it’s what helped me process my own problems and solutions. Being able to capture the attentions of many with wit and vulnerability was simply the icing on top.
I wanted to advance the branches of who I was so I began implementing music and songs into my set lists to make them more dynamic.
I began designing clothing that affirms the wearer that I like to call A Reminder By AJoeSaint. Where words of affirmation (loved, beautiful, creative just to name of few) are written in reverse, so when the wearer takes a selfie or looks in the mirror they are quietly reminded of their value, beauty, and worth.
Lastly, I have been hosting and curating live music events called AJoeSaint & Friends, where poetry, rap, & RnB meet with a DJ, live instrumentation, and a few surprises are thrown in! They have been my labors of love and things I have been proud of.
I hope to expand my talents in the future so if anyone needs a host, curator, or a feature, please do not hesitate to reach out at AJoeSaint.com 🙂
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Connectivity- A very important aspect of this creative life is not walking it alone. There are bounties of knowledge, experience, and support encapsulated in other artists that it is a necessity to connect with others, connect with your community, to grow and flourish in your craft.
Faith- I approach everything I do prayerfully. In this creative life there are plenty of ebbs and flows and it is very easy to lose focus and get caught up in the glamour and the things that don’t matter. Staying grounded in Christ, knowing He cares about my existence, character, and craft keeps me striving to be the best person I can be despite the pitfalls and ego trips that are scattered about this journey we call life.
One piece of advice- There will be times when things don’t flow as easily, where that imposter syndrome might creep into your psyche and you feel like you can’t keep up. Please know, you are talented beyond the need for keeping up with the rat race. Don’t be lax with your gift, but please know your gift will make room for you; you do not have to grind 24/7, take a break and come back fresh and renewed. Your time will come.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I LOVE collaboration. I believe it is one of my redeeming art qualities. Whether it is to feature me in a song or feature me in real life, let me help you bring your vision into reality.
