Meet AAron Vereen

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful AAron Vereen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with AAron below.

Hi AAron , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My drumming journey began when I was six years old through my mother’s Afro-Caribbean drum and dance company. I was very shy and suffered from anxiety and the drums helped me to overcome this and develop self-confidence. I later began touring the world extensively as a drummer and percussionist, (which I really loved), but I knew I had a higher calling than just performing onstage…
I eventually went to Ghana to study West African drumming where I was fortunate to live amongst Shamans and grand master drummers, who taught me how to truly tap into the healing powers of the drum.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I use the drums as a form of therapy for teens and adults who suffer from mental health disorders, alcohol and substance abuse as well as PTSD. Drumming is very spiritual and it helps to break down mental and social barriers. It also helps to express repressed emotions nonverbally as some people struggle to open up and talk about their trauma or feelings.

My drum therapy sessions are designed to guide you on a journey of self-discovery and healing. Through the rhythmic pulse of the drums, you’ll be encouraged to explore your emotions, let go of stress, and find solace in the power of sound. Each session is a personalized experience that meets you where you are on your path to well-being.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey are –

1 My knowledge on the history of the drums and the countless rhythms from various cultures

2 My intuitiveness that helps me to connect with people

3 Learning from grand master drummers and shamans

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Whenever I feel overwhelmed I meditate, and afterwards I sit with my favorite drum that has a grounding tone which really soothes me while I play meditative and soothing rhythms. This helps me to block out all the noise and chaos from the outside world and quiets the mind. My advice is not to look at your phone the first thing in the morning as this sets the tone for how you’ll behave or react to your environment throughout your day. Instead, you should meditate to balance your mind, body and spirit which will help you navigate through your daily life or routine.
