We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Abhash Singh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Abhash below.
Hi Abhash, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
In short- by doing what I love to do the most. When I joined college, all starry-eyed and wanting to write for films, I had no idea the level of competition I was about to face. Almost everyone was better equipped, better prepared and vastly more knowledgeable about the various aspects involved in the making of a film. In the beginning, no one would take me or what I was trying to pitch seriously. Until one day, I found a group of like-minded people and set out to make my own film. The total disregard for what would happen if I failed is what pushed us forward. From a guy who just wanted to write stories; I transitioned into the guy who wanted to bring them on screen. And its not like we didn’t fail. We failed spectacularly. But I realized that me and my team had so much fun in the process, that we were ready to fail all over again. And that boosted my confidence more than anything else. As I continued doing what I loved doing the most, we failed again and again; but most importantly, we learnt. And that’s what slowly and slowly developed into a new found sense of confidence that allowed me to experiment more and more without the fear of failure.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Well, I make films. I tell stories. And I don’t think I could do anything else. Its so exhilarating when characters and situations that you create are able to emotionally and intellectually resonate with people all over the world. They can make people laugh, cry, think or just be able to comfort them. To make someone feel heard; to make someone feel like they are not alone. To make someone feel hope, or to make someone not lose hope. Cinema has the power to alter your feelings, your opinions and a lot more. Its a living, breathing thing that pulsates with raw emotion and consciousness. And to be able to create that is one of the best jobs in the world, one that I am very lucky I get to do on a daily basis.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Perseverance; Patience and Empathy. Without perseverance, you won’t be able to last long as Filmmaking is quite an arduous process. Patience; because most of the times things don’t go your way. Especially when you’re part of a small independent film crew. I often joke around that Murphy’s Law should be applied to almost every film set. But if you’re patient, you’ll eventually find a way around. And empathy, because without it; your film will have no soul.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Take a deep breath, sit back down; and relax. Let your mind take it one step at a time. Generally the toughest of problems have the simplest of solutions. But in order to reach an in-depth understanding of the problem, you first need to be in a mental condition to be able to analyze the problem.
