We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adita Yrizarry-Lang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adita below.
Hi Adita, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
I basically grew up in health and wellness. I started teaching group exercise classes when I was 16, at a time when the adults were not sure I could pull it off. The next thing I knew, I was packing in the room and having a great time teaching. All of this while finishing high school. That was probably my first “risk taking adventure”. I knew I wanted to teach, but the owners of the club had their reservations becuse of my age. In my mind, “what’s the worse thing that could happen?”, they don’t let me teach??
This has always been my mantra for taking risks…”What’s the worse thing that could happen?” I know it sounds a bit dark, but it’s the reality. If you can clearly see how you can overcome the worse thing, then “the worse thing” will never happen, at least that’s my experience.
Since that time, I just do what I do. At the age of 18 I was offered the opportunity to teach at the very first fitness conference in Los Angeles, The IDEA Fitness Convention. Before I started to teach, I looked accross the 500 people in the room and asked my question. Well, I could fall off the stage, the music could turn off, I could forget what I was going to teach…In my mind, these were all doable, so I went for it. This spearheaded a carreer I knew nothing about. I traveled the world teaching other fitness professionals new modalities and never looked back.
As the years have gone on I have delt with opening resort spas, a broken back, a divorce, and then there was COVID.
Covid 19 was a biggie, a totally unknown phenomena. In one day my coaching clients canceled their contracts, my corporate clients canceled their events, and there I was.
I believe that part of taking risks is also the ability to recreate yourself, that in itself is a risk. Starting over, creating something new. COVID pushed the envelope on this one. I knew I would’n’t go homeless, so I made it happen, I turned my in-person buisness into a virtual empire and pushed ahead. Honestly, so many of my cohorts are still not embracing virtual, for me this has been a game changer in many regards. Taking this risk, and all the risks before this, has brought me to where I am today.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I love what I do, and I love the health changes I can inspire. Having the ability to touch so many lives is a gift.
I currently focus on coaching, speaking engagements and corporate wellness events. Companies and individuals bring me in to help motivate them with healthy habits, but not just any. I pride myself in being able to take all of the latest reasearch and bring it to a level that makes it easy to implement into someones daily life. I believe that manufacturers, gyms, nutritionists, and more have made this healthy thing” way too complicated. I am all about making it easy.
I avoid writing diets, counting macros, calories, or pounds, it doesn’t have to be that challenging. I teach people about food and movement, and then show them how to make the best choices for their health. When I discuss health, it is a combination of Exercise and Movement, Food and Nutrition, Sleep and Relaxation, and Happiness. Combined, this makes a healthy individual.
I take topics like stress, heart disease, and weight loss and break it down to understandable nuggets that make sence. My clients, and listeners, leave with a better understanding and action items that they feel are doable in their lives. We are all different and there is no cookie cutter approach to health.
I enjoy figuring out the best ways of introducing healthy habits for all the different people I meet.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My specialties and expertise include anatomy and biomechanics, and nutrition. But the things that have helped propeled me forward are my ability to listen and empathise, combined with my vast knowledge of tech and design.
As an enteprenuer, I became a one woman show. Everything from graphic design to video editing became part of my wheel house. I pride myself in colorful and informative presentations, handouts, and video clips. All designed to create engagement and excitment for my participants.
When you are creating a business, it’s important to understand all the parts that make things move forward. You might not be great at some things, or maybe not even like doing them, but you do need the experience. This way, once you are ready to hire, you have a clear understanding of what you need to make your business successfull.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am constantly looking to work with HR directors and event planners. Creating engaging presentations is what I love doing. At the same time, I love making life easier for those planning the events. I simply want to inpire healthy habits into others.
