We were lucky to catch up with Adriana & Zahirah recently and have shared our conversation below.
Adriana & Zahirah , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
As we navigate through these unprecedented times, we have found an incredible amount of resilience in ourselves derived from our life experiences as women of color living in a world that was never designed for our benefit. With women’s roles being somewhat predefined for most of history, women who choose to pursue more than motherhood and a traditional family lifestyle are met with a number of challenges, from lack of confidence and support within relationships, to imposter syndrome, to simply not being provided the same opportunities as other groups of people.
In addition to our personal ups and downs in life, having children in the world depending on you to meet their needs creates an indescribably tenacious disposition. We share a “Can’t stop, won’t stop.” mentality if you will. And this resilient mindset throttles us to the next level of our journey time and time again.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We own and operate a Softplay business with a high emphasis on sensory exploration, inclusion, & supporting physical and mental development in children ages (0-6).
After careful consideration and research we chose several items to offer to our customers A La Carte style and in the form of predefined packages. By doing this, we created different price points that can be affordable for people across many demographics. Our ultimate goal is to have a location where we can offer our resources in one place in addition to our mobile services where we can provide a safe & supportive space for children as well as adults.
With our very first year of operation, coming to a close, we plan to roll out a series of sensory products to reach children & families who may not be in our vicinity. Many parents may find their children are struggling with sensory development issues and that is okay. We’ve found that through acknowledgement and acceptance of these issues, the path to improvement is already underway. Through our products and services, we will create amazing opportunities and high quality experiences for families near and far.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In any successful business, the founders usually possess a number of qualities, skills, and areas of expertise that manifest into the foundation of the business entity. For us, we found that Adriana’s business management skills and background accompanied with Zahirah’s expertise in early education, caring for children with exceptional needs, and background working in the EMT field topped with our shared knowledge of what it takes to provide a high quality customer experience was most impactful for us.
For anyone just starting out, we encourage you to search within yourself and pull from your strengths and interests and hone them into your business to yield your desired results. Anybody can run a business but what separates you from everyone else? If you can find that, you can create something special.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
Our ideal clients possess a caring disposition towards children. We want to serve people who are invested in early education & healthy development of their own children and children in the community. People who are supportive of strong family foundations and positive relationships in family units of all types. Forward-thinkers who want to improve the conditions of our world in anyway they can. People who display a high sense of ethics and empathy and are working diligently to instill those core values into the next generation human beings are our type of people.
